(LaVale, MD) – A check on a disabled vehicle led to a criminal arrest by a Maryland state trooper in Allegany County this past weekend.
The accused is identified as Michael Anthony Parkinson, 35, of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Parkinson was the driver and sole occupant of a blue 2010 Toyota passenger vehicle. Parkinson is charged with the possession and distribution of controlled dangerous substances. He was also served on the scene with an arrest warrant for a previous criminal violation in Allegany County.
Shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2019, a trooper from the Cumberland Barrack was on routine patrol when she noticed what appeared to be a disabled vehicle on the narrow right shoulder of westbound I-68 near the top of Haystack Mountain. The trooper pulled over to check on the driver of the disabled vehicle, who had stopped slightly over the solid white lane marker in the travel portion of the roadway.
When a computer check revealed the driver of the vehicle, identified as Parkinson, was wanted on an active criminal arrest warrant in Allegany County, he was taken into police custody. Further investigation on the scene revealed numerous illegal drugs in the vehicle to include almost 350 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 3.5 grams of heroin, prescription drugs and U.S. currency. Parkinson’s vehicle was towed and stored at the MSP Cumberland Barrack while he was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center.
An investigator from the Allegany County Narcotic Task Force responded to assist with the investigation. Similar cooperative enforcement efforts are expected in the future as law enforcement cooperation in Allegany County continues as police officers work together to keep the county safe.
