Fire erupts in building on White House grounds - The White House - MSNBC.com
WASHINGTON - A fire broke out near Vice President Dick Cheney's ceremonial office in a building next to the White House on Wednesday, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate.
Cheney was in the White House with President Bush when the blaze began, and everyone inside the building was evacuated safely, White House officials said.
Thick black smoke billowed from a second-floor section of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building building facing the West Wing of the presidential mansion as firefighters arrived on the scene.
The Executive Office Building houses the Office of Management and Budget and staff of the National Security Council and other agencies.
The fire appeared to be contained to only a few offices.
There were no evacuations from the West Wing of the White House. Cheney normally works inside the White House itself.
The EEOB, a granite and cast-iron structure, was originally built between 1871 and 1888.
District of Columbia Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter said firefighters saw smoke coming out of telephone or electrical equipment and there was no indication of terrorism.
The city was targeted in the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked airliner attacks.
