Chevy Volt Unveiled... it's cute and sporty!

General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle on Tuesday, allowing outsiders their first full look at the car GM says will go on sale in 2010.

"The Volt symbolizes GM's commitment to the future," said Rick Wagoner, the company's chairman and CEO.

The Volt will be driven by electricity stored in a large T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack running the length of the car. After charging for several hours, the Volt will be able to run for up to about 40 miles without using gasoline.

GM did not announce pricing for the car, which will have the equivalent of about 150 horsepower and a top speed of 100 mph, the automaker said.

The car will cost "less than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee" to recharge, and use less electricity annually than a refrigerator. The Volt should cost less than 2 cents per mile to drive on electricity, GM said, compared to 12 cents a mile on gasoline at a price of $3.60 a gallon.

As the battery begins to run down as the car is in use, a small gasoline engine will turn on and generate enough electricity to drive the car about 300 miles.

So...

...$.02 vs. $.12 per mile. 20,000 miles a year = $2,000 savings a year over gas.

Step in the right direction.

I'll bet the savings will be even more. Since the range is limited while on battery, I can see people using it for more "around town" kind of trips and limiting their total mileage per year. It would be the "frugal" mentality of avoiding using fuel at all.

But then again... what the heck do I know?

What a piece of junk. They said the price is going to be around 40 grand...... So when you need a battery replacement, that will be about 10 grand, and I am sure its not cheap to work on those cars if something goes wrong since its all electrical. ITs good they are looking for other sources of energy, but I don't think this is the right directions.

40k sticker price for the Volt, 22k for the Prius.

.02 per mile for the Volt, .07 for the Prius.

$400 a year fuel cost for the Volt, $1400 for the Prius. <$100 a month difference/ benefit to the Volt

0% financing for 60 months:

$666 a month for the Volt

$366 for the Prius.. a $3600 savings for the Prius..

You come out ahead >$2000 a year sticking with the Prius.

...but there is plenty of conversation that says this IS where we're going; electric cars that you plug into the house. There are all sorts of battery ideas going on and only through being in he market are they gonna get better and better.

I mean, we're talking, before too long, car bodies and paints that absorb sun light while you're out and about to help keep you charged up, long life batteries, quick charge technologies and so forth.

And that's with this years Prius.. assuming NO further development or better mileage in the 2010 model.

Yep, way to take the lead GM!!

...now. The Prius was $40,000 > when it first came out if memory serves.

Plus, look at high mileage users, 30-40,000 miles a year. How about trucks that are on the road some 50-100k a year. Police cars, delivery vehicles, the mail man and so forth.

SIL has had a Prius for more than three years, they paid less than 24K..

High Mileage users won't be getting the .02 per mile they advertise. The more you go over the 40 mile all electric range, the cost per mile goes up. You're just a BIG prius after the first 40 miles (unless they stop every 40 miles for 3 - 6 hours to recharge).

I doubt after the initial 40 miles their mileage is even comparable to a Prius.

The cost of the car is important but it's not everything. Equally important is for our nation not to be at the mercy of Hugo and the Ragheads.

maybe they will make trailers that have electric motors on them too, that way they can connect to the cars computer and deliver the proper voltage to the trailers motors and away you go.

Or use the trailer wheels as generators to replenish the car.
