Everytime someone comes on here and asks, "where can I find child care?" The answer always comes up "Call LOCATE" or "Call the Southern Maryland Child Care Resource Center"
I just got an email that says that SMCCRC is in very serious trouble and may cease to exist in the very near future if they can't restore their funding from the state. A bill is in committee now and is about to be KILLED which will keep the SMCCRC open.
Not only have many of you parents used the referral service, but the SMCCRC also provides affordable training to child care providers. Training is required by the state and without this service, it would be almost impossible for providers to find affordable training. Providers may have to raise their rates and/or close altogether if they can't find training. Here's the email (too long for one post):
URGENT ALERT – CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
The House Appropriations Committee and Senate Budget and Taxation Committee have cut $1 million from the appropriation for the Maryland Child Care Resource Network. Call your legislators and tell them that this funding must be restored, or else the Network will be decimated.
<o></o>
Background:<o></o>
<o></o>
1. The budget that the Governor proposed in January for FY 2006 contained $1.8 million for the Network (a cut of $2 million from FY 2005).
2. In Supplemental Budget No. 1, the Governor included an additional $1 million for the Network, a partial restoration that will allow the Network to survive. The House of Delegates cut the entire $1 million supplemental. The Senate cut $800,000.
3. The Network funding will now be determined by a Conference Committee, made up of both Delegates and Senators. They must put back the $1 million that the Governor included in the Supplemental.
<o></o>
The members of the Conference Committee will be key members of the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee.
If one of your legislators sits on either of those Committees, you need to speak with them directly--as soon as possible--and urge them to do everything they can to restore the $1 million. Try to get a commitment from them. Let them know that if the funding is not restored, the Resource Center in your area will close, with disastrous consequences for families and child care providers.
If your legislators do not sit on those Committees, they can still use their influence. They need to hear the same message.
Use the information below to contact your legislators. Pay special attention to the listed members of the House Appropriations Committee and the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee.
