LA PLATA, Md. (June 5, 2007) - Four children were struck by an automobile this morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. on the 6700 block of Glen Albin Road in La Plata. The driver fled the scene, but was later apprehended by police.

A 4-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy were flown to Children’s Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., by Maryland State Police helicopter. Another 9-year-old boy was transported to Civista Medical Center in La Plata and a 17-year-old boy was treated on the scene by emergency medical services. The children attend Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School and were being supervised by an adult and a 17 year old.

The investigation by police revealed that several children were waiting for their school bus by the side of the street. Witnesses told officers that a white Pontiac Grand Prix veered to the right and struck the children as they were sitting on the curb and standing on the sidewalk. The vehicle slowed but continued on running a stop sign at the end of the block.

Police broadcast a lookout for the suspect vehicle. At 8:52 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle on St. Patricks Drive off of Crain Highway in Waldorf. Physical evidence on the car lead officers to believe it was the suspect vehicle and a witness at the scene was able to confirm it.

The driver, Jacqueline E. Simmons, 29, of King George, was charged with driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol, driving while impaired by a controlled drug substance, failure to stop after an accident with injury and failure to stop at a stop sign. Simmons is being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner.

Look my ass glows!
A Charles County judge granted 29-year-year-old Jacqueline Simmons $50,000 bond, and she walked out of jail after her mother posted the money. WTH?????????

At her court hearing, prosecutors revealed that she had previous convictions for driving under the influence and hit-and-run.

Simmons' mother told the judge that her daughter is battling a methadone addiction and that her daughter could move in with her until her trial.:yay: Yeah, that'll work! :jameo:

 She should have been kept until her hearing. They should have charged that stupid bi... with assault with intent. Damn

The best thing for her methadone addiction was to keep her behind bars. Her mother is foolish to think she is going to keep her clean.

The bus driver pulled up just a few minutes after the accident occurred. There was blood everywhere and about 20 children at that stop. Didn’t the judge even consider the fact that there are children that witnessed that tragic incident? Didn’t the judge even consider that soon after, blood everywhere, an entire bus load of classmates saw the medics working on these children, preparing them to fly out?

I am disappointed in the judge’s decision to let her out on any bond. The children, at the very least, need to know that when you do something like this, you get locked up, PERIOD! No bond! JMO

No pity for her, none! :boo:

I wanted to post a follow up to this article and some interesting information.

The prosecutor asked the judge to hold Simmons without bond, saying that the victims suffered serous injuries and that Simmons had two convictions for driving under the influence in 2005 and 2006 in South Carolina, as well as a prior hit-and-run conviction in 2005.

Simmons asked the judge to reduce her bail from $25,000, saying she isn't a flight risk. Her mother told the judge that her heart broke for the parents of the victims, that her daughter was battling a methadone addiction and that her daughter could move in with her while the case was pending.

I am disappointed in what the judge allowed here. :ohwell:
