  • Gao Feng, a ministry spokesperson for China’s Commerce Ministry, said that both sides had agreed to simultaneously cancel some existing tariffs on one another’s goods, according to the country’s state broadcaster.
  • One important condition for a limited trade agreement, Feng insisted, was that the U.S. and China must remove the same amount of charges at the same time.
  • Fresh hopes of a “phase one” trade agreement prompted U.S. stock index futures to rally Thursday morning.

Almost as if they need our money more than we need their goods, so the "trade war" ends up with China removing tariffs they've always had, and we remove new tariffs.

Huh....like he knew what he was doing all along.

Huh...so Toilet_Paper....where in the article does it say China is removing tariffs they've always had???

Just to point out the stunningly obvious; (you even have the relevant quote in your text)

The operative word in that sentence is "some". That does not mean all.

If this masterful deal fits the Trump MO, then all this will do is remove the tariffs that have been imposed since Trump started this bullshit last year. Trump will have caused the problem negatively impacted our farmers, lobster fisherman and slowed the entire world economy...then removes what HE did and claims some massive (yet non-existent) victory.

I see by the post count that an ignored someone has already posted. Maybe one of her co-conspirators will be along shortly to continue the discussion.

Good move. Tariffs were not a good idea to begin with and while we have yet to see any measurable benefit from the tariffs as promised to US workers/industries/consumers, getting rid of these tariffs sooner than later is a good thing.

Unfortunately, there have been instances like these that have come and gone. With no time table and an end goal of "remov[ing] all tariffs as soon as possible”, I hope this deal doesn't end up like the others.

It appears "Tariff Man" isn't letting go, and still believes China is paying these tariffs.

President Donald Trump said Friday he hasn't decided to lift or reduce any tariffs on Chinese goods, one day after a Chinese government spokesperson said the two sides had agreed on that.
Trump also reiterated that discussions were continuing. "They want to make a deal. Frankly, they want to make a deal a lot more than I do," he said. "I'm very happy right now. We're taking in billions of dollars" in tariff payments.
Still, Navarro complained that "yesterday’s misleading (and market moving) coverage of the 'tariff rollback' story was one of the worst examples [of China trade coverage] to date. The story began with a declaration by propagandists within the Chinese government that the U.S. had agreed to a 'phased cancellation' of the tariffs and that 'tariffs already increased should be canceled at the same time and by the same rate.'"

"This claim was simply false," Navarro said. "There was no such agreement — yet the story was splashed all over newspaper headlines and cable news chyrons as if it had been confirmed by reliable U.S. sources."
