choosing brake pads for SUV

What brake pads do you use on your SUV?

I'm trying to decide on what to replace our all stock 05' Nissan Xterra OffRoad front brake pads with.

I don't plan to have the rotors resurfaced as they are very smooth and no vibration and very little wear. I plan to use some emery cloth on them to remove deposits.

I'm leaning more towards some good aftermarket ceramic pads like Akebono... but the OEM pads are also a good idea with such things like warranty issues and the like (if anything ever came up).

Increased performance and brake fade over stock is not a concern. I'm more worried about longevity and reliability while keeping the same braking characteristics as the stock brakes.

BF says just go to Autozone or Napa and get the top end ones. He says that Raybestos are good, too.

:yeahthat: I got new pads for my GMC 1/2 ton, went to Advance. They had multiple levels of quality, one being equiv to OEM without paying the OEM price from a dealer. Very happy with them.

I bought brakes and rotors online for the LR.

EBC- Green with dimpled and slotted rotors.

I have yet to do the backs on either truck, but did notice a significant improvement.

BG's Exporer had severly warped rotors. Visibly noticeable when I removed them. and went to NAPA and bought their high grade disks and rotors.. maybe $30 - 40 difference between the crap grade.

I like the EBC better, and have a set in my toolbox waiting to go on the bike.

I went to AutoZone to get the front pads for my '05 Expedition. They had alot of options and were very knowledgeable. :yay: These have a lifetime warranty as well.

Oh, and don't buy EBC from a store.. $$$$$, You can get them online for at least 1/2 as much.

I always use EBCs on the bikes, never tried them on the truck...

thanks for the input guys

i'm kind of hesitant about EBC... the last set of greenstuff pads i installed on our old audi ate up the powerslot rotors... but that couldve been from crappy rotors

I've heard good things about Hawk pads too

tomorrow i'll be calling the stealership to see what type of OE pads the Xterra uses (semi-metallic or ceramic) and how much they want for them...

If nothing else, check with the dealer, and the the pads that came with the vehicle. Manufactures, do indeed match components with their veichles... If nothing else, you'll get a handle on the original design details!

How many miles did you get out of those pads ?

I know it's expensive, but I would buy them from Nissan......imo.

I replaced the rotors and pads on my truck with sets from Rotorpros.com. Best money Ive spent for that truck. Too bad I'm not going to have it much longer.

Anyway, the brakes are great. Went with drilled and slotted rotors...overkill for a truck like mine abd went with their low dust pads, which turned out to be EBC pads. I love them. Stops better than I ever remember and my front wheels are staying fairly clean...much cleaner than the raybestos pads that I used to buy.

Unless you are racing, don't bother getting ceramics. They'll glaze over and start squeeling like mad. They need to be heated up repeatedly in oreder to stay in good shape. Everyday driving doesn't do it. The few folks that I know that put them on their cars, took them off within a year.

I put NAPA TruStop Ceramic pads and new rotors on my Tundra when I had it. They worked great and were very reasonable. I really didn't need the rotors but they were cheap enough that I bought them to keep the originals fot turning. No down time.
