Choosing colors to paint the interior

Was wondering what everyones thoughts were on painting the interior of your house. Should every room be the same color, a different color? Should the ceiling be the same colors as the walls?

I found a shade of gray that I like but have never seen gray walls before, what do you think?

My mom did her living room walls in silver/gray. We kept the trim and ceiling white. It looks fabulous... especially since she has red couch and loveseat and her coffee table, end tables, entertainment center, etc. are black which all compliment the walls very nicely.

It basically all boils down to whatever you want. We painted our ceilings to match our walls, but we have ghey popcorn ceilings, so it detracts from that, and makes the rooms seem larger.

Polka-dots (doesn't matter what color), you'll love them, trust me.

In my house, all rooms are painted a different color within the same tonal family. And I didn't do the ceilings because I painted in darker colors and was afraid doing the ceiling as well would make it look too closed in.

Did paint the ceiling in my son's room a sky blue and it did make the room seem a lot smaller. So you did right.

We've painted all the rooms/ceilings very light colors, so it opens them up. :yay:

I rule of thumb is...all rooms should flow from one to the other. Living room, kitchen, dining room... One room should always pick up a color from the other room. If you paint one room gray, paint the next room a color from the drapes.

I've asked the same question to various designers when struggling with "whole house painting". I've seen new homes where nearly all the rooms were painted the same light yellow color and I thought it looked fantastic, flowed well, and made the house seem bigger. But you lose out on the emotions of different colors when you do that. I went with "pick three colors in the same tone (i.e., muted or shaded) and use them throughout the house" designer advice. You can use different shades of colors in each room to make the rooms a bit more varied. For example, you can have basic colors of green, yellow, and red. The study might be Merlot with green & yellow accents (secondardy and tertiary colors) while the kitchen might be Sage with yellow and purple accents.
