Boarding in ice hockey is a penalty called when an offending player violently pushes an opposing player into the boards of the hockey rink, when the player is facing the board. The boarding call is quite often a major penalty due to the likelihood of injury sustained by the player who was boarded. However if no injury is sustained a minor penalty will be called. Boarding is assessed to a player when the opposing player is hit 4-5 feet away from the boards and hits his head against the boards on the way down.
Hollwegs hit on Simon was not Boarding, it was a regular check. Chris Simon hit the boards upright. If Simon didnt like the hit, then go after him with your fists.... Not with a Paul Bunyun chop across the face.
...the measure of the penalty is what happens, not the infraction itself?
It looks to me like Hallweg started his check 4-5 feet from the boards. You're saying had Simon fallen to the ice and then been paralyzed, it would have been, what, a minor?
Simon had just scored, right? Or assisted? So, Hollweg 'beanballed' him, right? Simon did go in face first.
I'm not defending Simon any more than I did Hunter when he attacked Lafontaine years ago in the playoffs and killed the Isles playoffs.
It's the goonery. It's no different than going after a players knees in football or taking a guys legs out when he goes to dunk in basketball. Most sports have moved into a new century, the NHL doesn't seem interested.
