1 Corinthians 10:1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.” 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. 9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
OK... I read the commentary. According to the title from my online Bible, Paul is sharing warnings from Israel's history. Back when COVID first got roaring, I was called to the doctor's office to get a blood test. I was having surgery on my eye and they needed to make sure I was clear to proceed. The doctor's office had a little lab and a lab tech so all the blood work was done right there. I wasn't sick but I sure didn't want to get sick. At the eye doctor's office, everyone was required to wear a mask who entered the building. At the primary care doctor's office there was not a mask in sight and none were made available. When the lab tech came toward me to take my blood, I asked her about a mask. She said "I don't need a mask... I've got God".
I think that lab tech was giving us a modern take on what Paul was talking to the Corinthians about.
Just because I have accepted Jesus as my Savior ... Just because I have been Baptized in the Name of Jesus my Savior ... Just because I belonged to a church... I am not sin free. Jesus will help me out with the consequences for the things I did before I became a Christian... but I still have to pay consequences for what I do now. Jesus will help me through temptation if I ask His help.... but He doesn't guarantee that I will have a temptation free life. Poop happens and we get some on us. That's life.
Paul is back to the cutting of the thingy again. Paul says, "Just because your thingy is cut ceremoniously, you are not immune to temptation." Being Jewish is not a vaccine against sin. You actually have to watch what you are doing. You have to keep your hands as clean as possible. You need to avoid some people.
Back in the day, moms used to take their kids around other kids who were sick with Measles or Chickenpox. They didn't call it "getting herd immunity" then, but that's what it was. We thought if we got Chickenpox from the kid down the block... We were immune and safe. It was "better than a vaccine". Now we get the consequences.... Shingles. If you bypassed the vaccine for Chickenpox, you are now a candidate for Shingles.
Just because "we've got God", there are still consequences for everything we do. Just because you have been granted eternal life as a Christian, you want to make sure you don't spend that eternal life in Hades.
You are not immune to sin. You have to behave. You still have to keep your hands as clean as possible. You still have to do whatever you can to make sure you don't make things worse.
Christians are not immune to sin.
