Gov. Martin O’Malley’s recently passed $1 a pack tax on cigarettes is driving down the sale of cigarettes by the pack, according to a letter send this month to O’Malley and state legislative leaders by Comptroller Peter Franchot.

I don't know about that. You are goign to waste a lot more money on gas driving to VA or DC than you are going to save on your cigs.

I guess that depends on where you are in MD, and where in DC/VA you need to drive... And lots of people have to go to DC/VA regularly anyway.

I live an hour from DC so I would have to buy a lot of cigs to make up for the amount of gas I am going to burn on the trip.

I would say this is the largest reason sales percentages are down. I personally smoke 1/3 to 1/2 less than I used to.
