Circumcision Confusion

HELP!

I finally had my little boy last week. Before I had him I was dead set on having him circumsized. Here in Florida (at least where I'm at) they don't do the circumcision at the hospital, you take the baby to their pediatrician. Anyway, my boy is "suppose" to have the dead done on Friday, but I have been reading information about the whole circumcision issue like it's not needed and it's only for cosmetic purposes.

Does anyone one with little boys out there have any info they can pass along to me? I read that it's really painful for the baby. I was under the impression that they numbed the area however my pediatrician said that was not the case and claimed that it was NOT as painful as everyone thinks it is.

Someone enlighten me on this subject please! There are nothing but girls in my family and I'm the only one with a boy so of course my family is no help.

Thanks!!!!

I've always heard that an uncircumcised boy is more prone to infections and that it's a biatch to clean out the "crevices." But i don't have any kids, so I really don't know much about it.

Only if you don't do what the doctor tell you. Otherwise it should be just fine. Just make sure you clean him there everytime makes a mess.

Congratulations!!

Both my boys were circumcised and didn't even cry when it was done. And if taken care of heal's quickly.

Not being circumcised you really have to teach him how to clean well constantly. Thing's get stuck in nook's and cranny's:wink:

There has also been a recent study showing women with partner's who haven't been circumcised have higher instances of infection's.

As long as they give him the numbing cream (Emla cream I think it's called) he should be fine.

I just had my 13 month old done last wednesday, due to medical reasons it couldn't be done at birth, and my dr wouldn't do it at a couple months because he didn't feel ok doing it without pain med's or putting him under, so I had it done last week as outpatient at hospital, he did ok, he was put to sleep, he had a little pain, it was worse on him because he is older and moved a lot. But everything turned out good. And I'm sure everything will go fine for you also.

Both of my boys are teenagers now.... We also took them to the pediatrician for the circumsion. If the information regarding infection doesn't move you to action think about this. One day he will be older, Nothing worse than being "different" as a teenage boy.

Get it done. My babies did cry but only for a second. It'll be just fine.

Both my boys were done in the hospital. I read up on it beforehand. There are pros and cons to the procedure. There can be issues keeping it clean if not done. If you don't keep it clean it can lead to infection. There has been some suggestion by research that circumsized men have fewer issues later in life.

The arguements against: It's not natural or strictly necessary. It can be painful. If you are careful with cleaning, and teach the boy how to take care of himself when he gets older, you can avoid problems.

There has been some research into the pain factor. Some doctors will numb, some won't. Some argue that any crying is the result of being cold and nekkid and in an unfamiliar situation. Some research has said if the boy is nursing or taking a bottle during the procedure, they do better, don't cry as much. That would suggest that they aren't really in pain, just uncomfortable.

Another reason for doing it is for later on in the lad's life. He might run into a girl of Jewish persuasion and everyone knows Jewish women won't touch anything unless it is already 10% off.

10% off :yikes:
Oh, that explains some things ...

Congrats Meme!
Another issue, if Daddy had it done - then one day Junior might question why he has a turtle neck and Daddy does not.

I don't like the idea of male circumcision in general. I'm especially concerned about having it done to a baby boy, when he isn't old enough to decide for himself whether he wants it done. I feel the same way about ear piercings for girls. I know a few parents who have it done to their girls at 2 months, and I would never do that. Certainly, ear piercings are much less minor surgery than circumcisions, but isn't the principle the same?

Meme - first congratulations on your little one and for surviving all these hurricanes! I have two sons. The first was circumcised by the pediatrician using no anesthesia - it went pretty poorly for all involved as to pain, infection, etc. When I had my second son I refused to let the pediatrician at the hospital do the procedure. Instead it was performed by a urologist - and let me tell you that made all the difference - not a single whimper and no follow up problems. You may want to investigate that route. Good luck.

No, the principle isn't really the same. Ear piercings are not surgical and will repair themselves to some degree if the ear rings are removed. That said, I'm glad to see a male point of view on this, especially since it's the same point of view I have. Had I had a boy, I would have preferred leaving it up to him to make the decision to alter his body in any fashion. How much more difficult would it be to wait until the kid pipes up with "I don't want to be different", then let him make the decision to have it done?

I also remember reading that circumcision decreases senstivity and have wondered if that might have some bearing on erectile dysfunction in older men.

I didn't pierce my daughters ears. That was a decision she made when she was 6.

Some of my male friends have said (in talking to other men about the issue) they seem to have more sensitivity not being circumcised vs. their friends who are.
