One word the university deems inappropriate is “American.”

Americans shouldn’t say they’re “American.” Instead, they should say they are “U.S. citizens” because “American” often refers only to “people from the United States only, thereby insinuating that the U.S. is the most important country in the Americas.”

This reminds me of a book I have a book in the stacks titled "A Country Without A Name."

Here is part of the précis: "In an imaginative and masterful work of history, Pulitzer Prize-winner Sebastian de Grazia has created two memorable characters. Nineteen-year-old Oliver Huggins is in for the tutorial of his life. For twelve afternoons, Claire St. John, a beguiling British graduate student, will reveal to him the untold story of American Constitutional history. Her means: the Socratic method. Her message: that the Constitution was itself unconstitutional, and that its authors' inability to choose a name for the republic muddied the document's meaning for the future ahead."

Well they are correct. But I'm surprised any fine liberal would allow asking a question about citizenship status.
Canadians (jokingly) take exception to the US being labeled America, as do the Mexicans, Central and South America as well.
Not to mention the aboriginal people of the continent
