Clean eating

I've been eating clean (no preservatives, chemicals, artificial crap, processed/refined foods, nothing I can't pronounce, etc) for awhile now, fell off over the holidays, and now I'm back in the saddle.

In cleaning out my freezer and pantry I checked the label on those Johnsonville Grillers - the ingredients list reads like a freaking chemistry experiment. There is almost nothing in them that you would recognize as food.

Anyway, in the trash they went. Ick.

So anyone else trying to stay away from non-food edibles? Last night I made the most yummy snack mix with nuts, pure maple syrup, honey, and natural peanut butter. I really do feel better when I only eat real food and stay away from lab creations.

I always try to eat clean -- been doing it for a few years. That said, I will have the occasional junk food, bad for you, but super yummy stuff. On Sunday I made stuffed shells w/ creamy alfredo garlic bread and also a Mexican enchilada bake. Both were soooo good! You have to splurge and treat yourself sometimes and w/in moderation.

Surely you jest ...
I'm slowly changing, turning around. I just found the grillers so I'll hang awhile with them, then eventually let them go. Really working on the high salt issue with products I can change out. The microwave pork rinds I grabbed onto here is long gone. While they weren't bad, the sodium was off the charts, so I gave them away. I'm sure the grillers are high too, but if I eat a processed deal like that the rest of the salt intake for the day is 0. I have switched almost all my canned soups out for healthy versions. MSG is something I look out for too.

Trying to cook more of my soups and other meals myself to give me the control I need to keep it healthy. I have a small 2 qt. Rival crock pot, perfect for cooking for one or two. Baby Steps as they say, don't want to shock the system all at once.

I keep trying to get back on the wagon, but the holidays and this cold weather is killing me. I  comfort food.

I do much better if I plan all my food for the day. I just had a yummy salad with roasted chicken and avocado and later I'll snack on some apples and almond butter.

Honest truth. You feel better and make better choices. When I eat something that's junk, I feel gross, my stomach hurts, and I'm tired. Clean eating has many benefits and is a much better option for me.

I usually cook on Sundays for the week. I portion out my meals, both breakfast and lunch, and my evening meals consist of something very small but high in protein or a protein shake if it's really late and I'm not that hungry.

I prefer chemicals. I am thinking of skipping the fake food part and just drinking the chemicals.

I'm allergic to whey so I can't do most shakes :frown: I do kinda of the same thing on my telework Monday. I make turkey chili and roast some chicken and use it during the week. I also try to chop up lots of veggies, so if I come home tired most of the prep work for dinner is already done.

I found this Turkey Chili recipe on Beyond Diet. It's easy and pretty tasty.

Servings: 4

(David Kirsch, The Ultimate New York Body Plan)

2 tsp butter, divided
1 lb lean ground turkey
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 cup coarsely chopped red bell pepper
1 medium onion, coarsely chopped (~¾ cup)
⅔ cup coarsely chopped celery (~⅔ stalk)
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tsp chili powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp ground cumin
⅛ tsp ground cayenne pepper
14½ oz plum tomatoes, chopped (canned with juice is fine)
½ cup chicken stock (or low-fat low-sodium chicken broth)
1 bay leaf
Directions

Heat 1 tsp butter in a 3-quart saucepan over high heat. Add the turkey, and season to taste with the salt and black pepper. Break up the turkey and cook for 2–3 minutes, or until browned. Remove to a bowl and cover to keep warm.
Reduce the heat to low, heat the other 1 tsp butter, and cook the red pepper, onion, celery, and garlic for 3–5 minutes, or until vegetables begin to soften. Add the chili powder, paprika, cumin, and cayenne and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Increase the heat to medium, and add the tomatoes, stock, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.
Add the browned turkey, and simmer 5 minutes more. Remove and discard the bay leaf before serving.

I prefer chemicals. I am thinking of skipping the fake food part and just drinking the chemicals.

I heard that's the leading cause of MOOBS

So I guess that means no more Roy's chicken and little piggies for you.

I ODed on junk during the holidays and must detox before I introduce anymore of it into my system.

Which is not to say the fried chickie and piggies weren't worth it - they absolutely were and I enjoyed every nom nommy bite.

Thats how them b*tch's R
I have friends who cook several chicken breasts for the week. I have never been able to eat a reheated chicken breast. It doesn't taste right to me. I love the idea though.

Speaking of food... it would be kind of embarassing trying to explain what an appetizer is to someone from a starving country, "Yeah, the appetizer. That's the food we eat before we have our food... No, no, your'e thinking of dessert. That's the food we eat after we have our food."

All foods are made up of unpronounceable chemicals.
