Cleric Sadr threatens "open war" on Iraq government

"BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Saturday threatened an "open war" against the Iraqi government unless it halted a crackdown by Iraqi and U.S. security forces on his followers.

The specter of a full-scale uprising by Sadr sharply raises the stakes in his confrontation with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who has threatened to ban the anti-American cleric's movement from political life unless he disbands his militia.

A rebellion by Sadr's Mehdi Army militia -- which has tens of thousands of fighters -- could abruptly end a period of lower violence at a time when U.S. forces are starting to leave Iraq."

I can never understand why this guy isnt under the ground. He has been a royal pain in the butt since this thing started and IMO should have been take out of the equation.

Now they have to deal with him and his Iranian backed assassins.

Perhaps open war can eliminate enough of them where the Iraqui's can have some peace. Perhaps not, but cowtowing to him isnt going to do anything but make him stronger.

...Sadr, Iran. We have, as policy, strategeries that are designed to accomplish missions that incorporate new problems that, it would appear, are diametrically opposed to the original missions from being accomplished.

If you knew anything about 'nuance' you would know that. If you do, or hear better answers, fill me in because I am just lost on this stuff.

"Open war" instead of cowardly IED's and ambushes? This is great news!!!!

Bring it on! Fight on the battlefield, not in residential neighborhoods! May the best man win!

Something tells me that they won't really have open war because they know they would be annihilated in days.

I feel it is a little like dealing with poison oak, you can cut it back, but you cannot eradicate it.

Al Sadr and his bunch need pruning.

You GO, Mookie!:bigwhoop: Fat boy is squawking because Maliki is clamping down hard on his Mahdi Army, and he's losing control of Sadr City. The sooner he's six feet under the better.
