Clipping Claws

Now I know where the quick is, and to just trim the hook and all that... but Manny is not a fan of having his claws clipped at all. Are there any tricks to getting your cat to calm down while you're trying to get in there and get it done? I've tried getting one or two while he's napping, wrapping him up in a towel or blanket, and even having someone hold him while I clip, but he always hisses and growls and wriggles away before I get them all done.

Hints? Tips? Is having the vet do it pricey or traumatizing?

Hints on brushing teeth would be great, too actually.

I took Gidget to the groomer for her mani-pedi. Cost was $55, but they also shaved her butt and gave her an extreme brushing and bathing. She was extremely unhappy, but she got over it.

I only trim Chilli's nails because Tucker was declawed when I got him, and Jack doesn't use his for evil purposes. She doesn't like getting them trimmed, but I make her behave. I just sit her on my lap (I put my feet on the coffee table or something so her back can rest against my legs) so I can trim them. When I first started trimming them, she'd bite, hiss, growl, and try to run away. Now she only growls. I'd just tap her firmly on the nose and tell her "no bite" when she'd give me trouble. D used to want to help me by holding her head or something, but I told him she needed to learn to behave. It's no big deal now. I just use regular human nail clippers.

I don't brush their teeth, but if I did I'd probably wrap them in a towel.

You're turning into a crazy cat lady.

Wanna come over for alcohol and Rock Band? I think I can cure you.

That sounds like fun. We'll see how I'm feeling this evening, I feel kinda funky. Maybe a nap will do the trick.

Thanks, that really helps. Maybe I just need to make it a regular thing and let him get used to the fact that it's going to happen. Because he was such a hassle I usually put it off until absolutely necessary.

CUTE little avatar, luckystar!

I think the towel wrap is your best bet. Have someone hold the cat and do it as fast as you can, don't beat around the bush! Keep telling him/her good boy or good girl. The cat I mean... not the person holding the cat, hehe! Well you might want to thank that person afterwards in case they get a bloody mess and infection sets in and amputation is necessary. Just kidding!

Good luck! After a few times the cat will realize its not so bad at all!

I've always started when their young and don't have any problems. HOWEVER, Allie, the longhaired princess, isn't very agreeable and she will let me do one or two and then becomes a snot. I just do as many as she will let me and then go after her again later the same day.....or have Ott hold her. Probably easier for you to have somebody hold him while you do it.

My ill-behaved monster is scratching the trim on the doorways. If I regularly trimmed his nails, do you think it would help? He refuses to use a scratching post.

It probably would. Can't do damage if they're not sharp. It's worth a shot! Or you could put double sided tape on teh doorways. Or both.

 My cat only does it to get attention from me. She'll do it right in front of me, and as soon as I move she'll bolt. :ohwell: Luckily there's no damage.

I wish I could say that. I've got scratches on corner moulding (sp?) everywhere in my house; on my leather recliner and most recently my couch.

I also have a scratching post that is rarely "touched." I heard a while ago, that spraying FEBREEZE on things you don't want torn up works. Not for me...
