CNN Special: Black In America

Somehow on this forum Affirmative Action = “Black People” but according to Webster Affirmative Action means “an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups and women; also : a similar effort to promote the rights or progress of other disadvantaged persons.” If this definition has changed would someone please provide the new definition to Webster…

There are scholarships for Women and other minority groups as well so, I don’t understand why it’s a problem for there to be scholarships for African American students. There is plenty of scholarship money, grants, financial aid, etc., to assist with obtaining a higher education so, what’s the big deal?

I agree that we should all educate ourselves about other races to help us understand each other better. If there were specials on “White In America”, “Asian in America”, etc. I would watch them all because I would want to learn about other races and cultures. Instead of going back and forth about whose right and whose wrong let’s learn one another… We are all American’s living in America and we all deserve the same opportunities. But going back and forth about how gets this and who gets that doesn’t do anything for ANYONE…

No, I believe I generalized about all "minorities."

I think scholarships and other "prizes" should be acquired by merit, not by birthright. I would be embarrassed if someone told me I got something I had worked hard for, just because I have boobs. This would also help with people who are biracial or multi-raced. They would not HAVE to identify with one color or another and alienate one parent or side of the family in order to suit their needs.

No you wouldn't, you already said you see that every day! I wouldn't watch it either, who cares what it's like to be white in America, I think it is a STUPID idea and only furthers our separation and identification by race and something as uncontrollable as skin color, which is stupid.

Exactly, we should get it the same way--by merit. None of the Settlers had affirmative action and they were able to establish a country. Granted it was at the expense of Native Americans...that's another issue for later

Who are you to tell me what I would and would not watch? Please find the quote in which I stated "I see it everyday"... If you feel that educating yourself about other cultures and races is a stupid idea than sobeit... I personally find it to be quite shallow...

Touchy, I was just being flippant! I don't feel that educating myself about "OTHER CULTURES" is stupid. I would love to learn about Chinese people that live in China and Indian people that live in India and English people that live in Britain, and AMERICAN'S that live in AMERICA! Understand my point now? And, I reserve the RIGHT to be shallow if I want to, I'm an AMERICAN IN AMERICA. :patriot:

great post.
I like to know about the culture in other countries too... I dont care too much for those that try to invent a culture here in an attempt at giving them excuses or self worth, or those that try to demand we adhere to there cultures just becuase the hopped the border and took up residency.

Here's the kind of special I want to see on blacks in America:

Follow several young, black people on their journey through medical, law or engineering school or any technical or trade school. Watch them from beginning to end. Film the long days and nights of studying. Film their weekends when they get out to recreate. Show them graduating and getting their diploma. Show their job interviews, their starting salaries, and finally the salary they can expect to make, the whole nine yards.

This would be the best type of show to put on TV to show that ANYBODY can make it if they want to.

Almost everyone here wants a special about White in America. This "White in America" special is on everyday, everytime you turn on the television you see it. It's called normal television.

The series 'BLACK in AMERICA' is about African Americans. The overwhelming majority of whom share ancestors that were enslaved and brought to the Americas as property. Many millions of whom lived, suffered and died under horrific conditions. They were and are a group who were legislated out of the American constitution for 188 of the first 200 years of the United States of America. More importantly they were dehumanized out of the human condition in order that the atrocious conditions they were subjected to could be rationalized by the most progressive society in the history of civilization...America. Their histories, native lands, language and cultures were lost. They have no homelands to return to. Most of them have been here far longer than the average American. So the grandeur and the promise that attracts so many from around the world that you allude to in your sardonic way has a great deal to do with the hard work and sacrifice of the group that this series speaks to. I HOPE YOU WATCH IT and LEARN SOMETHING.

I wish it were just the ones that hopped the border. Unfortunately, it's every different group that comes here that wants us to cater to them. You came here for some reason or another. This is the way it is here. We SHOULD NOT change for anyone. BUT, the pussification of this country is making so every person that is different in some form or fashion can get want they want no matter how it effects someone else. The gubment can't seem to get English the official language, how are they going to change from hyphen American to just an American?

Everyone wants to be special, and thinks that the constitution awards them that right.

fact is, 99.99% of the population is just like me. Not special, Not the guru of life, not deserving of any special recognition...

too bad people cant just be happy with who they are.

Yes that is the deff of A/A, however, it appears that some "change the meaning" of some words to fit the meaning they want. and then white people aren't allowed to use the word.

OK so I took the "bait" and I'm watching this special right now, "Black in America - The Black Woman & Family". I don't see the point. Right now they are documenting a black single man with two children. I applaud his efforts in ensuring his children get a good education. However, in the meantime, his lease expires and he is evicted. That is not an example of "black in america". Every individual, black or white, has to abide by the law. His lease expired. Plain and simple. He is evicted. Is it because he is black that he is evicted? NO. Simply put, the lease expired. That happens across the nation, white, black, green, red, etc. What I don't see is his income source. I see his struggle to educate his children. I see his struggle to make sure they have a place to play basketball. I don't see his struggle to wake up every morning and earn an income.

I'm sure I'll get blasted for this, but I simply don't see the disparity of treatment. We all want our children to get an education and grow up in a safe neighborhood.

Sorry, I don't see the alledged uphill struggle that blacks have to endure. I am a single mother, who has to get up every morning and pay taxes just to make sure that unemployed individuals get housing and education.

Just my opinion, folks.

From what you described beach is that they should have changed the title to Living in America or watch how we can spin everyday occurances to make it out as the white man is keeping the black man down.
