Cocker Spaniels

Okay, so my husband and I just signed papers today to adopt a cocker spaniel. :yahoo: And I have a few questions that I cannot find answers to.

- How often do they usually need to go to the groomers?
- What kind of food (I know adult food, but like a particular brand/flavor) do they like?

I know there were some other silly questions I had, but I can't remember what they are now, but I figure this is a start. If you have any suggestions as to how to take care of a cocker spaniel, we'd appreciate it. My husband has always had a dog (even growing up), but this is a totally new experience for me. TIA!!

Not sure about grooming but ask the people you get the dog from what he/she has been eating and get that, it's not good to change food.

:yeahthat: Also make sure you brush the dog daily or you will regret it. I used to take mine every 4-6 weeks, depended on the cut. (meaning who did it and how well) Also, they tend to get yeast in their ears a lot so keep your nose peeled for stinky ears. Yeast in a dogs ears can make it go deaf. If you do change it's food, gradually mix in the new food with the old food like may 1/4 of what you feed him for the first few days then add about 1/2 and do that for a few days and so on. Good Luck, I am jealous. My baby went to rainbow bridge a few years back. You will love your dog!

We had a cocker spaniel when I was little and he was such a sweet boy. Have fun with your new pup. :huggy:

Thank you for the advice. I'm going to try to develop a routine when I get off work - walk the half-mile to the mailbox with the dog and then brush him before I have to start on dinner. That reminds me of the my other question! How much food do I give? He's estimated to be five to six years old. I'm sorry to hear about your pup. I'm so looking forward to owning a cocker spaniel! :yahoo:

I fell in love with him the minute I saw him and started playing with him. :)

Most foods will tell how much to feed as per his weight. He will most likely be around 15-20 lbs. Look to see how much to feed for that weight. Make sure to take him out within 20 minutes after he eats or drinks a lot or you will have a mess to clean up. :howdy:

Grooming depends on the dog. We breed cockers and shave most of ours down twice a year. If you like the longer fuller coat def brush once a week at least. Some cockers have a fuzzier coat and others more silky and smooth. We mostly have the silkier coats and they are much easier to care for than a cottony fuzzy one. Like someone said, watch the ears and clean them regularly. As far as food, see what he has been eating, and how much. We demand feed our dogs. They are pretty active and eat when they please. They were mostly raised this way and do not over eat. We only have one dog that is overweight and it is mostly because she is blind and just plain lazy. The others nibble throughout the day and do not pig out at "feed time". The benefits of feeding a couple times a day at certain times are you know approximately when doggy will have to go potty. We have never had problems with ours though, they go out a couple times a day. If they knnow about what time they will be let out I think it is pretty easy for them to adjust their potty schedule.
Good Luck with your cocker! They are wonderful dogs!
