Cockfighting Bust

I'm not a real fan or supporter of cockfighting but I don't understand the logic of prohibiting the game but then euthanizing the chickens anyway?

Cockfighting bust nets 5,000 chickens 2 hours, 34 minutes ago

SAN DIEGO - Authorities made what they called the largest cockfighting bust in U.S. history with the seizure of more than 5,000 roosters, hens and chicks from two training grounds, officials said.

Agents found 4,400 chickens Saturday at a 7-acre compound in the Otay Mesa industrial area of San Diego. More than 2,500 birds were seized at the same place six years ago in what was believed to be the nation's largest bust.

Hundreds more chickens were found this time at a second training ground nearby, officials said.

Other stings have resulted in more arrests but none have produced more birds, said John Goodwin, manager of animal fighting issues at The Humane Society of the United States, which deployed its own staff on the raid along with local and federal law enforcement agents.

"In terms of the number of animals seized, this is the biggest, hands down," he said Monday.

Fifty people were issued misdemeanor citations, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine, and ordered to answer to cockfighting charges in early December, said Paul Levikow, a spokesman for the San Diego County District Attorney's office. If the defendants have a history of animal cruelty, they may be charged with felonies.

Another 50 people are still being sought, authorities said.

About 80 percent of the birds seized have been euthanized, Levikow said.

The cockfighting operation was managed and patronized largely by Filipinos, and fights were staged in the San Diego area, Levikow said. Many birds were sent to the Philippines or Hawaii.

It's a moral...

...question.

If I kill a chicken to eat, that is morally acceptable.

If I kill one just to kill it or put it in a situation where it will suffer and die for my entertainment, it is morally unacceptable.

To kill these chickens off to get rid of them is a practical matter and therefore morally acceptable as it was done as part of an effort to prohibit their immoral use.

Are you kidding me?
Possibly because they strap razor blades to the roosters legs so they slice each other up to make it more of a blood bath. Of course, many of the owners would rather not do this so the fight last longer and the rooster suffers more. They had to euthanize them to put them out of their misery.

I'm not saying that cockfighting is legal or ethical. What I'm saying is not all the chickens are roosters breed to fight. Why not ask people to adopt them as pets?

They probably only put down the ones that were severly injured.

Man arrested on charges related to gamecock fighting

RAINBOW – San Diego Humane Society investigators have arrested a man here on charges of possessing 64 fighting gamecocks and materials used in cockfighting.

Joseph Bamoa, 50, was arrested Thursday at a ranch on Rainbow Creek Road.

The charges are misdemeanors. Bamoa was released pending a court date. He could not be reached yesterday for comment.

Authorities said they confiscated a large quantity of cockfighting paraphernalia, including razor-sharp "slashers" and gaffs, which are ice pick-like devices attached to birds' legs.

Humane Society law enforcement chief Capt. Beau Beauregard said investigators are following leads that may result in additional arrests.

"Cockfighting is a heinous, barbaric activity," he said. "We are putting cockfighters, dog fighters, and other animal abusers in San Diego County on notice."

In cockfighting, birds are placed in a pit to fight to the death. Even the victor can suffer serious injuries such as punctured lungs, broken limbs and pierced eyes.

Aficionados bet amounts from $50 to several thousand dollars on cockfights, which are illegal in 48 states. Louisiana and New Mexico are the only states that allow cockfighting.

Officials said they euthanized two dozen birds at the Rainbow residence that Bamoa admitted he owned.

"Unfortunately, there's nothing else that you can do with them," said society spokesman Gigi Bacon Theberge.

She said fighting cocks are usually so drugged, distressed, diseased and violent that they can't be placed with other flocks.

The other birds remain at the Rainbow property because of concerns about Newcastle disease until their owners attempt to claim them. The birds will probably be euthanized after a required 13-day waiting period.

"It's a sad situation all around," Theberge said.

I tend to disagree with these statements. My brother raises and fights cocks in the Philippines and they have better nutrition and program than most of the impoverished children in the country.

As far as being drugged, that's a total crap because if you get caught drugging a #### before the fight either to impair or enhance its performance, you would face the wrath of the people in the cockpit arena. Cheating in cockfighting is a serious no-no and could lead into beatings or even death to perpetrators.

Your brother SHOULD be beaten if his chickens eat better than the kid down the street. Anyone who makes money off this kind of thing, or even watches it for entertainment, should be beaten.

Then should should strat beating up those race horse owners because their horses are fed and cared for well better than most people on welfare.

Why is it so easy for you to judge one culture's sport from another? It's okay for people to beat up it's other in the ring but not okay for animals that would naturally fight with or without people's intervention anyway.

Roosters will fight to keep their hens, up to the point where they could die of exhaustion. Again, I'm not supporting cockfighting but don't judge other people's culture.

BTW, are you a pet owner? Do you take your pets to the Vet? Then why not take those unfortunate citizens of this country who cannot afford insurance to the doctor instead?

Those examples are rediculous.

Hmmm... This philosophy has potential.

Comparing a chicken killed for dinner to a chicken fighting for its life in a death match is comparing apples and oranges.

Its a bit like comparing petting your dog ,to having sex with it.

Hmm, let see. It almost sound the same as those who support abortion, kill them while you can so they don't grow up as bitter, unwanted children who would likely commit immoral acts or crimes.
