Coconut Oil Sucks: Most Overrated "Healthy" foods

Stick to canola...:coffee:

If you haven't been bombarded by the media or somebody on Facebook raving about the miraculous, all-healing powers of coconut oil, you've either been living under a rock or you're really, really good at blocking people from college (and your mom) on social media.

But not everyone buys into the idea that coconut oil is a panacea sent straight from the heavens, even those in the health world. So which "superfoods" do nutritionists think get more hype than they deserve?

I remember just 30 years ago coconut oil was the worst thing ever and would kill you dead, instantly, to exaggerate just a little bit.

Kale and Quinoa.

Kale is okay, but what makes it better than any other leafy greens. Why is EVERYTHING kale? Seriously, there's broccoli, spinach, collard greens, mustard greens, and a million other green things that you can eat. Not every meal has to contain kale. It's ridiculous. There must be some Kale advocacy group.

Quinoa, I just can't like it, no matter how I try. I'm not allergic to gluten and neither is anybody else, regardless of what some blog says, unless you are hospitalized for your reaction to eating it and your doctor has diagnosed you and you are going through treatments. Out of all the people who claim to have a gluten allergy, I've only known of one person who actually does, and it is a miserable experience that involves a lot of hospitalization. So people need to stop trying to make everybody else "gluten-free" for some bs fade and demanding quinoa on menus. These people need to stop pretending to be some pseudo-sick gluten fake allergic freak pretending want-to-be. These losers are the reason why pork chops now have "gluten-free" stickers in the meat aisle. If you are so ignorant that you don't know what has gluten without a sticker on it, then you don't have a gluten allergy.

I always assumed that coconut oil, kale, quinoa, or whatever fad was a result of corporate marketing. Corporation XYZ gets ahold of a new holding and markets it in the most fantastically beautiful manner that only big business can do. Pay for a semi-biased pseudo-scientific test for your product, hire some bloggers, create memes for social media, start advertising and voila you have a purposefully-created fad for your new product that is most likely made in 3rd world nations.

I use coconut oil as a moisturizer and makeup remover. Peanut oil is my cooking oil of choice, so I hope it never becomes a big fad which makes the price go up.

Wasn't it movie theater popcorn that was killing people 10-20 years ago because it was popped in coconut oil? (Mmmmm... movie theater popcorn.:drool:)

When I worked in the movie theaters in the early 80s, our popcorn was popped with some sort of vegetable oil. It came in gallon containers.

But wait, there's more...

I like CO for moisturizing the shizz out of my hair! I try to do it 1x/week. Put on dry hair at night, put a towel on the pillow, wake up & wash/condition as usual. Seriously shiny stuff!

For cooking at high temps, I use grape seed oil for the high smoke point. :yay:

I actually read something not long ago that your better off using animal fats for frying as plant based oils are not as stable at high heats and release chemicals that kind of negate their benefits. As far as coconut oil, it has one of the highest heat tolerances but that is only if you get the refined coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil starts to break down well below the normal temps used in frying.
