St. Mary's County Government Warns Residents of Possible Flooding
Leonardtown - 9/23/2008

By Anna Bedford
This evening, around 7 p.m., St. Mary’s County Government issued a Code Red warning of possible flooding for the area. A costal flood watch is in effect from tonight until late Wednesday night. During this time there may be tides one to three feet above normal or high tides.

A costal flood watch means that conditions are conducive to flooding.

You can sign up to receive Code Red messages on the county government website at St. Mary's County Government Emergency Notification System Disclaimer.

Everyone may have gotten a phone call but I just wanted to make sure if you missed it, that you got the message.

Why? We are not to get rain tonight are we..Am I confused?

I think that they are worried about the winds and the tides. Something about when it's high tide the wind could push it in to flood. Dunno if that's accurate don't quote me on it.

Interesting, I am signed up to receive these calls on both my home phone and my cell phone and did not receive a call on either. Maybe they got the day wrong and realized it before all the calls went out!

I am assuming this possible flooding is due to the Nor'easter that is currently off the coast of North Carolina and is heading this way. It is supposed to be raining and windy tomorrow. The weather radar pictures look like Virginia Beach/Norfolk are already getting the outer bands of it.

For those of you that don't know much about nor'easters they can sometime be worse that a minor hurricane (or as bad). Part of it just depends on how long they like to stick around.

Hopefully, no one will have any serious damage when this thing does decide to show up.

Got my calls on both cell and home phones yesterday. Figured they were just pushing it out early so everyone knew to keep an eye out.
