From the Computer thread.
There is no reason to do this. The Cable Companies will refer to security concerns they have, as being the reason, but there are all sorts of technology, and their was plenty of time, to implement those technologies to address their concerns without making their Cable Networks proprietary. They expect us to believe that they just simply couldn't figure out any solution, other than the one that forces their customer to use Set Top Boxes that are incompatible with all their equipment and replaces their TV tuners, and have to rent any equipment from them to use their service.
This violates the 1996 Telecommunications act by the way, but NOTE I said manipulate the political system, law and regulatory system, and thus the Cable Companies were able to all get waivers so they don't have to comply with the law.
Consumers should be aware, COMCAST and the rest of the Cable Companies are either the most technically inept companies of the modern era, -OR- they are shrewdly manipulating consumer ignorance, the political system, law and the regularity system for an anti-competitive advantage. You decide, my read of the situation, it can only be one of those two choices.
If your interested, you can click the link and read the replies, but the end of the story is; and its NOT only COMCAST, but COMCAST has locked their service into a PROPRIETARY system that locks out any equipment from competing companies and forces customers to rent inferior equipment to replace it.How do folks record from Cable TV? I used Direct TV DVR's for so many years, but now find myself using Comcast, and they cost too much $$ for DVR's (have to be tight with $$ to keep the rescue afloat) so I am wondering what other options there are for recording from Cable TV.
Comcast quoted me a price for service that was supposed to include the DVRs, but now I find out it's $50 more a month for that service. So I either have to pay up, downgrade, or cancel my service with them.
If I don't find a decent solution I'm going back to Direct TV.
