I have suddenly found a lot of time on my hand and heard this is the time of the year to get into Commercial Fishing. Does anyone know how or where I can get into this industry at?

The state of Maryland is not issuing any new licenses/permits for commercial fishing. You would have to buy a license/business from an exisiting licensee with strings attached for transfer.

It is a difficult process and not a very profitable business.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

My husband is a commercial fisherman (waterman) and beleive me there is no money in it unless you are one of these people that do everything illegal and don't get caught. But for the honest man it sucks big time. Long hours and hard work but nothing to show for it.

Being a waterman is a dying cultural thing in St. Mary's County.
I have watched it dying slowly over the last 50 years and its a sad thing to watch.

Tha catches are down to little or nothing. ,there is even talk of having an outright ban on crabbing in order to try and salvage the crab population.
Fishing is down and some of the fish have sores , the oyster population is practically nill. If you want to go in business today on the water it better be to charge tourists for a boat ride, because thats all that will be left pretty soon, from the way its going.

Last year we were even warned not even touch the river water.

St Marys County isnt a rural farming and Fishing County any more. We are a bedroom community for DC and the base. Our farms are being gobbled up for homes and the water isnt fit to swim in.

Annapolis cant do anything for the waterman except raise his taxes and force him off his waterfront home.

not saying you are one of them but,
I do know a few watermen and to be honest the majority of them have the attitude that the government has no place regulating their catch, or restricting where they can put their pots.

the fact is, basically the watermen have overfished for years and are now paying the price.

Surprising

No one mentioned the high price of fuel especially for the Charter and Head Boat side of the industry. I mean because of fuel cost, who wants to pay over 60.00 a head just to catch up to two Rock Fish. Aside from the enjoyment it doesn't make much sense any longer to spend that kind of money for what you or may not catch.

I agree that it has been overworked but it is all my husband has ever done. I get mad about these "recreational crabbers" that go catch what they are allowed, take them in and sell them, then go back out and do it all over again how ever many times a day that they can. Also, I think up until this year, Virginia waterman have always been able to keep sponge crabs. For some of you that don't know what that is, it is the female crab that is carrying the babies. Maryland has never been able to keep them. And to the stupid, ignorant people in annapolis that want to ban the waterman from catching female crabs, not all females have babies, only the immature females are the ones that have babies, once a female has shed they can no longer have them.
