(LANHAM, MD) – A combined law enforcement initiative today in Prince George’s County involved the inspection of nearly 500 commercial vehicles and resulted in 24 percent of them being placed out-of-service for a variety of critical safety violations. Out-of-service declarations require that repairs be made to correct the violations before the vehicle can head back onto the highway. This event coincided with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 72-hour International Roadcheck event.
Assisted by personnel from eight different enforcement agencies, troopers, commercial vehicle safety inspectors and cadets from the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division conducted one of their largest inspection operations of the year. Commercial vehicles on I-495/95 were directed into the parking lot at FedEx Field where county, state and federal inspectors stood by to conduct a variety of safety and equipment inspections, as well as size and weight checks. In all, 80 traffic citations and 191 warnings were issued.
Participating agencies included the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Montgomery County Police Department, Loudon County (VA) Police Department, Maryland Department of the Environment, Maryland Comptroller’s Office, United States Park Police, United States Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
