Computer Help

Trying to see if some of the more tech savvy forum members could help me trouble shoot. My desktop will no longer boot up. Fan comes on but nothing else happens. Read somewhere it might be the mother board, any other ideas?

possibilities:

Motherboard - depending on the age ... bad capacitors
Power Supply - seems counter intuitive since the FAN comes on ... but if there is not a Clean 5V signal the computer will no pass the POST [Power On Self Test]
CPU [not likely]
Video Card

how old is the PC.

Computer is 5-6 years old, been looking to replace it after the holidays.
Just didn't want to loose all of the files on it.

you files should be fine ....

.... buy a new computer - lots of great deals now ...

purchase or borrow a USB - IDE / SATA Hard Disk Adapter ... follow the instructions, using the hard drive from your old PC

I agree with Gurps. My experience has usually been an issue with the video card followed by old capacitors on the motherboard. I had an Asus motherboard a few years back that had a bad batch of electrolytic capacitors. The little guys blew their tops real good.

I quit buying MB's that use a SiS chipset after two failed. Never had an Intel chipset go bad.

I've had experience with this being a power supply. If you have the technical ability it might be most cost effective to replace it. Depending on what components are in the PC would determine how much of one you need to buy. If you are still messing with it would help if you gave the specs here.
