All I wanted to do was to power up my old desk top computer to down load the pictures and documents. I hit the button and ........ nothing!

I checked the connections and the outlet. No help.

What can I do to start the computer or at least get the stuff off of it? How much would it be to take to a shop?

Maybe it's the power supply.

yes. There are other things plugged in to the power strip that work and I tried other outlets.

Any suggestions for where to take it?

Will the data still be on the hard drive if it's been in power failure for a long time??

yes the data will be there

do you have skills with tools ..
most computers are not difficult to dismantle and then remove the hard drive

see the Railroad thread about USB Hard Drive Adapters

whoa, hold on. A lot of computers have a secondary power switch on the power supply of the computer itself.

Will normally be a black rocker, with a I and an O on it, should be set to I

My troubleshooting motto is, "It's always something stupid," and that is where I like to start. Occasionally it's a real problem, but usually it's something dumb like having your capslock on or having your power switch turned off.

It's odd for a computer to just not power on.

If you can't turn your computer on then maybe you need to spice things up a little.
Try wearing something skimpy or maybe nothing at all.

Check to see if your monitor is on? Your computer may be booted up but you can't tell if your monitor has bee turned off (if you have a quite computer).

People....This is not my first rodeo. Checked for a button. Didn't look for power at the monitor. The power button didn't light and no other start up sounds....just dead, dead, dead..

Oh and Firebrand...I even talked dirty to the computer, but it still didn't turn on.....Well maybe I just cursed at it, but close.

I'll second that. When my last computer died Sean got everything off the hard drive for me and saved my life.

Well since I have a couple of other dead to partially dead computers around (and a budding computer technician) I ordered the "adapter thing" so next time you need your files recovered, I'll be your source! :yay:

Whisper sweet nothings...

Tie it to the desk...
