Something interesting about Kennedy I either forgot or never knew. In 1980 Jimmy Carter was the sitting president running for his second term and he was so hated that Kennedy, his fellow democrat ran against him in the democratic primary..........and lost. The guy got beaten by a hated Jimmy Carter. Now I know Carter was an incumbent president and had a huge edge, but he was so unpopular and so hated that negated any edge he had.
Other than some of his fellow NE'ders, the image of MAry Joe Kopechne hovered above him and hence proved himself rather unelectable to others. That he saved himself at the expense of another says a lot (and leaves even more unsaid).
