...this is what it is all about:

Building constitutional law protecting the rights of all citizens, both good and bad, basic inalienable civil rights and all subject to the will of the people through the ballot box and not some evil box by the side of the road set by people desperately clinging to a culture of genocide, thievery and tyranny.

I applaud you all!!!

May you continue to have the courage, will and wisdom to build a better Iraq for all your people!!!

Not at all, but for you to bring it up it is obvious that it caused a rise for you.

No son, that is not the case, but I've seen somebody else on these forums ask the same question you did in a similar situation.

You just gave yourself away. :ohwell:

I am not going to carry it any further.

However, I was just watching Fox News, and they've got video of Iraqi people dancing in the streets, overjoyed with their ability to elect leaders who will be writing their constitution in the near future. Heroic stories of people who braved the threat of death, if they dared try to vote their conscience.

There were people laughing and crying at the same time, thrilled over their freedom to choose. Wow! :yay:

I just looked at some pictures on the New York Times site, and am sitting here bawling my eyes out. Old woman being wheeled in on what looked like a farm cart, a disabled man's donkey and cart being checked for explosives, old women crying becaus they COULD vote, young people holding up their purple stained fingers in a 'peace' sign, men and women looking so happy and serious as they waited in line. They knew they were making history.

I wish our elections were this inspiring. We are so jaded anymore with our democracy, and to see it being born, in just this little way, is awe-inspiring.

May Allah grant them peace with their choices, and peace for their country. And I thank God that we as Americans were able to help, and to witness.

Dag now I am gonna be the bad guy... You all realize that within 5 years these new leaders will all have been assasinated and back to square one right?

Sorry ... I call em, like I see em.

Well, of course, THAT goes without saying, it IS the Middle East, and that line of thinking is realistic if somewhat sobering. But today was just a great occasion demonstrating the indomitable (sp) human spirit!

5 years - right. But they won't be back to square one because there's a governmental mechanism in place. They have a military now. A police force. A real live government. And if worse comes to worse, the US will jump in.

This is why it's so important that any Presidents after Bush are on board with this Iraq business. What I see happening is they'll wait to overthrow the new government after Bush is out of office, hoping that the next guy will let it go.

I can't argue with that logic. Anyone who's been around since Vietnam can see that Liberals do not a have the stomach for a prolonged conflict.

They may indeed start one, Kennedy/Johnson for example, but when the road gets tough, they start looking for a way to get out.

How many times have the Libs used "the quagmire of Vietnam" to try and scare up people's memory of how we failed to achieve a victory there.

Does anyone think that we will be out of there within 5 years? I certainly don't.

We can't possibly be. The number of troops will be reduced but there will still be a US military presence, make no mistake. It would be a damn shame to go through all this, just to pull out and leave the Iraqis high and dry.

But I'm not kidding myself into believing that whoever gets elected Prez of Iraq will be this saint. The foundation of democracy is so shaky right now and it would be pretty easy for another dictator to jump in and take over where Saddam left off. And it's hard to resist taking advantage of all that power. US Presidents can't get too carried away with abuse of power because we have a system of checks and balances. Not sure what the Iraqi Constitution looks like.

Consider:

We went to war last century with: Germany, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq (from Kuwait), the Balkans and Iraq again. We *still* have troops in ALL of those places. So, no. We'll still be there.

What *I* wonder is why the hell are we still in Germany, Japan and Korea?

(Edited to add: Ooops, NOT still in Vietnam)

I'm hoping we'll wisen up and close down our bases in Germany and England, and garrison those troops in Iraq. Then after we take Iran we can bring all the troops from Japan in to garrison that country.

Darn good question Sam. Why are we still in Germany? There was a time in Europe when the threat of the Cold War necessitated our presence there, but where is that threat now? Europe can handle it themselves, I think.

Japan has it's own self-defense force, so why do we need to be there?

Korea? I can understand that, because the North is still very hostile, volatile
and is unstable as he!!.

We need to bring our troops home from locations where they are not needed.

Well they keep complaining about our troops there. And why, over *50* years later, can't they defend themselves? Why must *we* defend them? It's likely that most people there have never known a time when American troops weren't there.
