Constant Meowing

We have an older cat, maybe around 14, who within the past few years has started to meow constantly. Food bowl filled, box cleaned, doesn't appear to be in pain. Last year the vet said he was healthy, he is due soon to go again.
He has lived in the same house since a kitten.

Has anyone had experience with this? What did you do? It is driving my mom insane, she yells at him to stop. I may be reinforcing the behavior because I give him attention to make him (and mom) stop. Could it be caused by hearing loss/cloudy sight due to his old age? He just stares at you and meows loudly. And recently he has started running to the bathroom (opened door, lights off) and just meowing as he stares into it.

TIA

My poor old kitty, Nolan, did the same thing when she got to be about 15. Maybe it's an old age thing. :frown:

Since he's due for a visit, I'd certainly ask the vet about his behavior, but it sounds just like my neighbors cat. She has gotten old and senile, and has poor vision. She has become much more vocal the last couple of years, to the point of being extremely annoying to her humans. It's almost like a human when we get old, just biotching 'cuz there's nothing better to do.

When mine did that, I found out she was blind. She meowed, because it was the only way she could find me.

Old people become loquacious and start blathering about all kinds of crazy ####. Maybe cats to too.

He's probably complaining about how kittens have it so easy today, and how damn ungrateful they are.

We have a cat who can see just fine, and he does that. He'll start howling and carrying on from another room 'til someone answers him, then coming running into the room to rub on your leg...but he doesn't want you to pick him up. He just wants to be by someone.

Our's does that as well. He's never been a lap cat, but more recently has gotten more loveable.

Thanks for the responses.

Cats suffer from old age ailments like we do. Could be she is suffering from a form of cat senility...getting confused, or may, as others have said, may be having vision issues....
Older cats need more than one check up a year. Be sure you see a vet that is good with senior pets.
Good luck!

Our male cat will howl when he is lonely until you call him. But... he gets lonely if he rounds a corner and can't see you anymore or sits behind the couch when you are sitting on the couch. He's not the smartest cat.

My mom's 17 year old cat did this. The cat was going deaf and blind, maybe senile, otherwise ok. My mom tolerated it during the day, at night put her in the laundry room with a night light, food, water, pee pan, and bed with heating pad. That way cat was less disoriented in the dark in a small place and didn't cry, and Mom could sleep.

The old cat doesn't meow much but the baby meows constantly. And the middle kitty is right behind her. Baby meows mostly to be let outside, so I pick her up and cuddle her just to piss her off.

When my cat won't leave me alone I'll pick him up and squeeze and kiss him until he gets mad (he's not a cuddler). I'm hoping he'll associate being annoying with being annoyed, but we're going on three years here...
