FWIW if you ever find money in MY home, it is mine, thanks.

Contractor, Owner Feud Over Hidden Cash

CLEVELAND (AP) - A contractor who helped discover bundles of Depression-era U.S. currency totaling $182,000 hidden behind bathroom walls said the homeowner should turn the money over to him or at least share it.

Bob Kitts said his feud with the owner of the 83-year house, a former high school classmate, has deteriorated to the point where they speak to each other only through lawyers.

Kitts said his lawyer has drafted a lawsuit that he hopes will force Amanda Reece to turn over the money she has kept.

Most of the currency, issued in 1927 and 1929, is in good condition, and some of the bills are so rare that one currency appraiser valued the treasure at up to $500,000, Kitts said. ..........

Somebody was pretty well off, considering they could hide $125,000+... during the Depression.

Kitts asserts he found lost money, and court rulings in Ohio establish that a "finders keepers" law applies if there's no reason to believe any owner will reappear to claim it.
The owner has claimed it; she bought the house, and she owns everything included therein.

I think he should take the 10% and be happy he got that much of a bonus.

The IRS is going to end up with most of it anyway, but the contractor is entitled to nothing, although i might give him a good tip.

:yeahthat: I would give the contractor a 10% bonus for finding the money. However if they demanded that I give them some of the money as soon as it was found I might not give them any of it.

If the contractor demanded the money from me, not only would I not give him any - I would fire him on the spot and take a dump in his work truck.

I have found a couple things working in construction, nothing of any real value  I can say that if I found that much money I do not know that I would say hey come look at this:lmao: This guy was doing work for a friend, I think the friends should have worked something out. I mean the guy could have just grabbed it and ran, leaving the owner in the dark.

He is a stupid idgit for thinking he has a claim. WTF. If he opened the wall and found black mold, would he have had to pay to fix it?

How does that old saying go: "Friendship ends where greed begins"? Wouldn't it be ironic if some great, great, great relative of Peter Dunne suddenly shows up to claim the money and neither one gets anything?

The worker would have to consider the fact that whoever you were doing the work for could have stashed the money there and known about it.

A good contractor would know when the space was last built or changed.

If I was in the dudes shoes I probably would have done the same thing. Id would be hard to hand over that much money when you know you could just walk away with it.

John Chambers, an attorney for Reece, said Kitts rejected his client's offer of a 10 percent finder's fee and demanded 40 percent of the small fortune.
He was offered a fair share. Now he deserves nothing because he is a greedy bastard.

The owner offered a 10% tip from what I've read. The value of the money isn't its face value, it's the value of being old and in very good condition.

The contractor in this case is being greedy. If someone offered me $18k as a tip, I'd spend it on Christmas!

Wow, not very ethical huh?

It is one thing if you find it out in the middle of nowhere, this was in a persons home, a friend no less.

Ok that may have sounded bad:lmao: I meant I would have done the same and called the owner. A crook could have just hauled it out of there without the owner ever knowing. Not saying I would do that by any means, but I think if it was in my hands the thought would occur, but then I would say no it's not the right thing. I'm too dang nice sometimes:lmao:

if I had found money ( valuables ) in another persons home I would never expected that it would be mine, after all, it was not my house. And I would be over joyed if they offered me a reward for finding it but I would never expected it. If it was really a huge amount ( the reward ) I would also give part of it to help others...I feel very blessed for what I have and it would be so great to be able to share. It is a shame that it has caused so much trouble, I don't understand fighting over it. If it were mine I would share it with people in need, not greed!
