The Mom knew damn well something was wrong with her son. People don't suddenly snap and slash the hell out of their parent, poking their eyes out for good measure, with no prior warning. But to admit that there was a problem would mean she'd also have to admit she isn't perfect - something she would literally rather die than do.

Doesn't matter how egocentric Mom was or what she was like. That boy had to be taught that killing is wrong. If you can distinguish right from wrong you should be found guilty and punished according to your crime.
