crabber killed in trot line in Benedict

Has anyone heard any details about the man who was crabbing near Benedict earlier today that somehow got tangled up in his trot line and drowned? Very sad. Prayers to his family.

From what I understand, a 29 y/o male from Edgewater got caught up in his trot line, solo, and was drug under the water and could not get help in time. It was located near the Drift Inn. Just when you think something so innocent can become deadly. Prayers to the family.

Also heard he started out with a friend on the friend's boat, and who became ill. The now deceased got him to shore and went back out to get the lines in when it happened.

My FIL and BIL live in Benedict, and we crab with trot line all the time there. You are so right that something that seems so innocent, can become deadly. This is devistating. I am so sorry, and I send my prayers, as well.

How exactly did he die (yes I know he drowned)? The weights aren't that heavy. How did he end up in the water? Could he not swim?

From what his sister told us happened - the cuz'n saw this boat going almost in circles and he was tied up in the line .. tried to get him loose and ended up getting hit by the prop on the motor.

I use cinder blocks as weights and when they get dug in with the bottom, they are kinda hard to pull up, not sure how you would be pulled under unless you somehow get it wrapped around your wrist and happen to go over, very sad.

Thoughts and Prayers going out to all involved. Learned a long time ago you have to respect water at all times, accidents can and do happen and it will kill you in a heartbeat.

I've since heard he was using an electric winder to bring in the trot line and got caught up in the line, the boat was running in circles and he was pulled under and hit by the propeller. God bless his family.

I normally don't like telling folks to shut the "f" up if you don't know what happened, but I do know direct from my DNR source and I am not going to go any further. He died very tragically and nothing "fishy" was going on!!! Prayers to his family. It was a very unusual accident, but that is just what it was! An accident.
