Do you think it would have been right for an African American to burn the flag back in the Jim Crow days?
Ever hear of a guy named Martin Luther King, Jr.? He advocated peaceful protest - getting your message out without pissing a lot of people off and making the situation worse. When bus companies made blacks stand or sit at the back, MLK didn't advocate burning the buses. He advocated using your right to not ride the bus, which hit them in the pocketbook and made a greater impact than firebombing it would have.

There were a lot of blacks who killed people and broke things - and pissed a lot of people off in the process - trying to get some rights. Black Panthers. Nation of Islam. The Weathermen. MLK thought there was a more productive way to get what you wanted. And I agree with his philosophy.

Guess I'll burn a Pride Flag in Dupont Circle in the name of morality.
If you want to. I prefer to stay away from fire. I always seem to singe my hair, and you know that doesn't smell to good....

When did flag burning kill someone? I guess it could happen if you accidentally caught yourself on fire.....

Any-hoo

As this wraps around, do you still feel that creationism should not be taught in schools? I mean, we do say the Pledge of Allegiance....One Nation...Under God.......If we pledge to it, why not teach it?

I can tell you know you've lost the debate because you've abandoned any sense of rationality and are now resorting to silly rejoinders.

Yay! We win, AimHigh! :high5:

I say stop teaching creationism period (leave it to the Church and parents). It really doesn't bother me about the pledge though. I think you should be able to omit the under god part if you want to.

You have your views and they will not change. I'm in full support of our first amendment rights. If you don't like freedom then go to Russia or China. I'm pretty sure they ban flag burning. :patriot:

Yes, as a matter of principle, burning the flag is a freedom of expression. However, being a Vet, I cannot honestly say that I approve of burning the flag. If I saw it happen in front of me, I would probably knock the (insert word here) out of them. :patriot:
Burning the flag? Well Congress thought enough of the flag and what it symbolizes to declare the following, “The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing”. How can you justify the burning of a living thing as a protected activity?

Pssst. You're fussing at the wrong person. Or do you just have UP on ignore?

Nope, I don't ignore, but it is for both of them (more so for UP), I just tried to attach my comment to the earliest reference I remembered reading.

Old Glory

My Name is Old Glory

I am the flag of the United States of America.
My name is Old Glory.
I fly atop the world's tallest buildings.
I stand watch in America's halls of justice.
I fly majestically over great institutes of learning.
I stand guard with the greatest military power in the world.
Look up! And see me!
I stand for peace - honor - truth and justice.
I stand for freedom
I am confident - I am arrogant
I am proud.
When I am flown with my fellow banners
My head is a little higher
My colors a little truer.
I bow to no one.
I am recognized all over the world.
I am worshipped - I am saluted - I am respected
I am revered - I am loved, and I am feared.
I have fought every battle of every war for more than 200 years:
Gettysburg, Shilo, Appomatox, San Juan Hill, the trenches of France,
the Argonne Forest, Anzio, Rome, the beaches of Normandy,
the deserts of Africa, the cane fields of the Philippines, the rice paddies andjungles of Guam, Okinawa, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Guadalcanal
New Britain, Peleliu, and many more islands.
And a score of places long forgotten by all but those who were with me.
I was there.
I led my soldiers - I followed them.
I watched over them.
They loved me.
I was on a small hill in Iwo Jima.
I was dirty, battle-worn and tired, but my soldiers cheered me,
and I was proud.
I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of
countries I have helped set free.
It does not hurt, for I am invincible.
I have been soiled, burned, torn and trampled on the streets of
my country, and when it is by those
with whom I have served in battle - it hurts.
But I shall overcome - for I am strong.
I have slipped the bonds of Earth and stand watch over the
uncharted new frontiers of space
from my vantage point on the moon.
I have been a silent witness to all of America's finest hours.
But my finest hour comes when I am torn into strips to
be used for bandages for my wounded comrades on the field of battle,
When I fly at half mast to honor my soldiers,
And when I lie in the trembling arms of a grieving
mother at the graveside of her fallen son.
I am proud.
My name is Old Glory.
Dear God - Long may I wave.

Read National Geographic's Evolution issue, from last month. Evolution is an extreemly very well established mechanism that fits perfectly with almost everything we know about life on earth. It is re-corroborated every day by more data and there is not a shred of evidence against it other than it conflicts with your particular religion's creation myth.

Besides, even if you wanted to present creation myths as alternatives to evolution, for whatever illogical reason, you would at least have to include the other major religions' creation myths.

While I'm on a rant.....

How did Jesus ever come to represent the narrow minded, hateful, fearful, unforgiving, war mongering, homophobic, book banning conservative agenda?

Jesus was so obviously opposite in every way, preaching love, peace, turn the other cheek pacifism, forgiveness, everyone welcome – even prostitutes, non materialism and general compassion.

How can anyone not see the disconnect here?

He was practically a stereotypical hippie! Either figure out what he stood for or quit using his name in your vain attempt to push your evil conservative crap on other people.

I was raised Christinan and I'm not telling anyone what to think - just to keep an open mind. I am telling people what I think and the reasons why.

What a cute little troll!

Does it do any tricks?

How can anyone not see the disconnect here?

Probably for the same reason that mean-spirited, hate filled, stereotyping, close-minded, liberals cannot see their own overblown bigotry. Including, but not limited to, the outdated stereotypical crap you're spewing in this very post.

No, of course not.

just to keep an open mind. I am telling people what I think and the reasons why.

Keep an open mind - like YOU!!! And categorize people who disagree with your ideological demagoguery as "narrow minded, hateful, fearful, unforgiving, war mongering, homophobic, book banning"

The hypocrisy demostrated in your snivelling screed would be almost comical, if it weren't so disgusting.

I cordially invite you to go pack sand.

cyfred...

...most would classify me as a conservative save one issue; religion.

I am an agnostic. I do not personally believe in any God and I think the various Bibles, the Koran, Torah etc. are among the most basic and human and, frankly, successful marketing programs of all time, simply designed to get people to behave and help a given culture survive if not prosper.

If it gets people to behave, I'm all for that. If it begats a Constitution and a Bill of Rights like ours, oh hell yeah.

One of the huge reasons I can't shut down enough of my brain to become a liberal is that I don't resent nor hate people of faith. The sad and funny part is that modern liberalism has become it's own religion replete with more dogma and self evident 'truths' than all the worlds religions put together. In the mean time, everybody else, oddly enough only Christian everybody elses, are 'weak' or a crank or religious freaks or whatever. Contempt.

At the end of tha day, George Bush gets down on his knees and prays for the strength to use his power wisely.

Bill Clinton just wants somebody to get down on their knees for him by the end of the day.

Now, Bill might have more fun but who you want in charge? The humble busy man or the one busy getting a hummer?

Ahmen.
