I have a copy of my credit report. There are a couple of things I want to clear up. The problem is under where it should say who the creditor is, it says unreported with a long number (not a phone #) underneath. How can I find out who the creditor is? TIA.

Is it something that is acurate or inacurate? You can always dispute the item. The creditor will have 30 days to validate it. If they dont or cant it will be removed.

I'm pretty sure it's accurate. I believe it's a doctor bill. Problem is, no name of the creditor or collection agency.

Hmm maybe it isnt listed with a creditor or collector and that is why it isnt listed. The Dr's office isnt allowed by law to list their information on your credit report. So I would guess your best bet be to contact the dr's office.

Hmm, I didn't know they weren't. I wonder why that is. Does the same go if they turned it over to a collection agency?

You should be able to call the credit report agency (Experian, Transunion, Equifax) and obtain the information (name and number) from them. If it is listed on all three, you only need to obtain the contact information from one of the agencies. If you pay the balance, you MUST contact the 3 bureaus to "dispute" the validity. They in turn will contact the agency reporting the item and it will be up to them to correct it. Once a determination has been made you'll receive a letter in the mail from the credit bureau.

Yeah if it were me I would just dispute it and let them figure it out. Best case scenario they cant validate it and it is removed, worst case they find out who has the debt and you pay it off.

Thanks for all the info. I guess I have some phone calls to make.

You can also go to freecreditreport.com,and see a pretty detailed history of any negative accounts. You will be charged a 1.00 "verification",but it drops right off,and you won't be billed unless you choose to go with their monitoring service-so take a peek and then cancel it. Also, you can dispute items on there right from the website, and I agree with lovinmaryland, you should dispute it right off the bat,and let the chips fall where they may.

www.annualcreditreport.com is the site where you can obtain your free (as required by law) credit report from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian once a year. This site does not require you to sign up for anything or be charged and then cancel later to avoid any further charges or services.

Via this site you are connected to the major agencies and any disputing of erroneous information or inquiries are made directly to the agency. I had one recently and it was all done on-line and very easy.

I recommend pulling one of these every four months to ensure you are on top of what they are saying about you. And remember these agencies report what they are provided they do not generate the data.

In closing please know only incorrect information can be legally removed. Negative information and incorrect information are not always the same. Be very careful if engaging a service to clean up your credit report that claims otherwise.

On the left will be the account number, underneath it will be the number of the reporting company (identifier) at the end of your credit report will be a list of reporting companies and then inquiring companies, there you will have your contact information. With Dr.s be wary, they will submit to your insurance and bill you anyway, double billing, and the amounts are usually small enough that you will just pay it rather than dispute it, and they win again. They also own most of their own collection agencies. The Dr. that owned the office building where my office was located in La Plata was raided by the FBI, his patients miraculously appeared at each of his 10 offices, even those that were just parking lots! Of course he left to start a practice in Iraq...
