Help "Invisible Dogs"
Selling a dog at the Farmer's Market wasn't your first clue?

HappyMom what they are saying is if he's selling at the Farmer's Market, he is 'not' a reputable place to buy from (I'll probably get slammed from some for saying that). i.e. Puppy Miller, busy back yard breeder, etc.... and normally those types of places don't put as much emphasis on the health of the puppies or their breeding stock, it's all in the $$ to them.

If you are looking for a dog, I'd suggest TriCounty Animal Shelter or one of your local rescues. The shelter gets AWESOME dogs that are too often overlooked. Not too mention, the shelter and rescues get a number of pure bred dogs as well.

How do you know one of those dogs didn't come from a "backyard breeder"?

Could have...but better to give your money to Tri County and save a life than it is to support those jerks that sell puppies at the market.

Ott and I stopped by the market about a month ago...it was on a day that was very windy and FREEZING COLD. Of course, I walked by the puppies. One of the Amish had several litters..one of them looked to be Pitts or Pitt mixes, about 8 weeks old. They were in an metal crate..no blankets, nothing. The poor things were all balled up together shivering terribly. I hate the people that sell those dogs at the market.

What would you consider a reputable breeder, most of them do it from their house or back yard.

One that has concern for bettering the breed...not breeding dogs that have genetic issues..taking the dogs to the vet once in a while to have them checked..not breeding them every time they come into heat.. There's a ton more but you get the idea.

-Backyard Breeders-
-Ignorance of selective breeding goals and techniques, and lack of familiarity with the breed standard of the type of dog being bred.

-Breeding of a working breed for appearance rather than working ability.

-Lack of adequate veterinary care and maintenance.

-Excessive breeding from individual #####es, to the detriment of their health.

-Sale of puppies with genetic disorders or undisclosed illnesses before they become evident to buyers.

-Lack of screening of potential owners or the provision of suitable information to prevent buyers from purchasing a dog that may be inappropriate for them or their lifestyle.

-Breeding for profit alone...or breeding of dogs for illegitimate reasons, such as for the usually illegal sports of baiting and dog fighting or to defend venues of criminal activity.

-Breeding without concern for the possibility of finding homes, though commercial means or otherwise, for the puppies, thus adding to the population of unwanted dogs.

-and on and on and on and on....

Thanks for the inputs. I was more or less wondering if anything specific had been heard about them.

My reason for asking was because I had already bought a chihuahua/jack russell terrier pup from them last weekend.
I had been wanting a small breed dog for a long period of time and had actually sent in applications for quiet a few resuces and they would not approve me due to not having a fenced in yard or they said I worked too many hours out of the home (4 a day). I also understand that puppies need to go out every 2 hours or so but to deny me the ability to save a puppy in need of good home is crazy.

My new pup is a indoor dog and 2.9 lbs and will only get to be 8lbs tops. For the new few weeks there is someone at home to take it out to potty all of the time but it also has the use of a potty pad for unexpected accidents.

Anways, I caved and saved my puppies life from this breeder. I got him and he was sleepy all the time and had runny nose.. I took him to the vet first thing on Monday morning and he was running a slight fever and was diagnoised with kennell cough. They put him on meds right away!
He now is acting like a normal puppy and playing all the time and he actually is really good. Doesn't bark alot and will sleep in his crate and wake me up for only 2 potty breaks in the night...

I called the breeder and left a message to inform him that my dog had kennell cough and though I still wanted to keep it he needs to put his other dogs on meds since obviously they will have it as well and never received a call back. Which means they probably wont get treated and others will have this same problem and their dogs could become worse with time or lack of seeing the vet.

While I know that he may have future problems due to this breeders lack of intellegance I am thankful I got him and am willing to pay the price for that.

Is there any way to get this brought to the attention of Animal safety people?? Shouldnt these dogs be checked in order to sell especially out in the public like that?
What can I do to prevent another sick dog from being sold?

My puppy Rosko was lucky that I was the one who got him and was smart enough to take him to get checked and correct the problem, but others might not be!! and that would be a horrible thing to see happen.

glad you got him to the vet when you did and it didnt turn into anything more serious. AND I hope you pup does not come down with anything else.

the point is.... he does not care, will not treat the other pups, and they may get worse. The Farmers Market is a breeding ground for parvo:cds: and most of the pups that are there have never had shots... and even if they have had one or two shots they are not immune to parvo or anything else yet.

Im sure he never talked to you about hypoglycemia. Please educate yourself about it.. and pick up a tube of Nutrical from Petco and give your pup some a few times a day with each meal. Make sure you feed your pup a high quality diet that is also high in calories. This will help prevent hypoglycemia as well. and prevent a very expensive vet bill or trip to the er hospital :huggy:

oohhh and dont forget about shots... dont take him to petco or anywhere unsafe and walk around until he is up to date on shots. :buddies:

It's such a shame that these people are allowed to do this to these helpless dogs:( I wish there was a way to stop it completely or if the health department could go by and do testing and take dogs from them..

Thanks for the information I will look it up now:) Rosko has only been in our home which he is the only dog in and is schedule to go back for his 2 wk check up to get his shots and heartworm pill. The vet didnt want to do it then since he was not completely healthy.

true.... just keep fingers crossed he was not exposed to the virus while out there.

Animal control did crack down on them .... and it has not changed much. Backyard breeders and puppy mills will continue until people are more educated about proper breeding... when, why and how.
