Has anyone used these types of phones before?

My son said he wanted a cell phone for his birthday but I dont want to sign up and get locked into a contract. I was thinking I could get him one of these type of unlimited monthly minute phones. But I dont want to get one if they dont cover our area well (St Mary's County)

Any thoughts or comments? Possible phone model suggestions? TIA

I am no expert but I would think if a boy had a phone called a "Cricket" he might get picked on at the playground.

I've been using an Android phone (Huawei Ascend) from Cricket for just over a year now. $58 for unlimited everything. I have no major complaints, but can't comment about reception in St. Mary's.

My minor complaint is just lack of 4G and phone options, but I'm fine with the trade-off due to the low cost and no contract. Keep in mind, I don't spend alot of time talking on the phone. I use it primarily for email/texting/twitter. Power talkers may find flaws I haven't noticed.

They just released the Huawei Ascend 2, wich is compatible with Android 2.3 . If he wants an Android phone, I'd go with that one if you're looking at Cricket. I plan on upgrading to that one soon.

I saw that so I am leary. I bought him a phone for Christmas but that phone requires you to pay 6 months in advance in order for it to be "unlimited" Sorry this isnt the gift that keeps on giving. I told him if he really wants the phone I'd pay for it and one month service after that it was up to him.

Where are you located at? You are the second person to reccommend both of those phones. Knowing him it would be mainly for text and internet use. When I punched in Mechanicsville zip it said there was service but there map shows roaming for Leonardtown which is where it would be 80% of the time. Is there a roaming charge?

I live in Alexandria now, but had the phone for a few months in Waldorf. Reception was good/okay enough in Waldorf, and good here in VA.

When I first got it, I asked if I could return the phone if the service sucked. They said I could, but would be charged a pro-rated amount for days I had the phone.

FYI: Sometimes the phones themselves are cheaper if you buy them from their website (mycricket.com) as opposed to in-store. I saved $50 on my phone that way. (Their internet sales are not honored in-store.) Only downside is you have to set it up yourself as opposed to walking out of the Cricket store with it fully functional. Also you'd have to return it through the mail, as well.

Check out their coverage maps. There are other companies (T-Mobile, Virgin, etc) that also have pre-paid Android plans and may show better coverage where you are.

I have never been charged a roaming fee, and have taken it around the country. But I was in populated areas, so am not sure if I was ever "roaming" while talking. There is no roaming charge for text/data, if I recall correctly. Just for any phone calls made while roaming.

I haven't been to their website in a while, so you may want to double check for newer information than I have provided.

Verizon does pre-paid. I don't know how it compares for price, but it's worth looking into.

Try boost mobile. It's 50 per month unlimited text and internet. The plan is called monthly unlimited with shrinkage. Every 6 months of paying ontime it reduces your bill by five dollars. After 1 1/2 years you bill is 35.00 per month unlimited text and internet. I haven't had an issue of reception in st mary's. I live in lexington Park.

Straight Talk uses Verizon or the AT&T network depending on the model of phone. If the phone model ends in a C then it is a CDMA (Verizon) phone, if the phone model ends in a G then it is a GSM (AT & T) phone.

:yeahthat:

Had no issues when I had a straight talk phone. But yes, make sure you get a CDMA phone so it will run off the verizon network.
