Just posting a new thread about crime in Charles Co./So.Md. in General.... its origins and how to fix the problem, local gang problems, and other mischief. What do you think the biggest problem is in So. Md. as far as crime is concerned? Robbery? Murder? Assault? Theft? Burglary?

A lack of morals which leads to committing any of the above.

Seemingly 'simple' crimes appear to escalate more often nowadays. Like some thugs approach a guy and demand his money, and get it, and then beat the crap out of the guy anyway. Or like the girl that got shot a few days ago; he did it because he didn't want them to win, or something, I guess.

I don't know any statistics; I just know it's getting spookier.

And I can't hardly wait to move.

These thugs are a bunch of whoosies. If they aren't in a pack or carrying a gun, they would be afraid to jump an 80 year old lady.
And yes I agree. I'm moving as soon as possible. The schools are filled with thugs, they county is filled with thugs, and the administration panders to all of them.

The biggest problem is the lack of adequate punishment for the crimes. I agree with hvp05's answer also. Assault is probably the worst or scariest but until we can legally carry, it will continue. Thank you Maryland, you blind fools! Every other RTC state has little to no crime!

Drug use is the basis of most of the violent crime in the area. The odds are very good that the guy who shot the little girl last week was looking for his next fix. Most theft and burglary is drug related. Drugs and alcohol also frequently contribute to assault and rape.

I think the biggest crime problem is Robbery. I think a cause of this is a lack of police officers in the County and the lack of respect for police officers who do their job aggressively. I think too many people Monday morning quarterback which is demoralizing to the officers on the beat!

+1

Very true. You consistantly see the most proactive and productive officers with the most complaints :banghead:

It'll make ya feel good..
I heard from a friend that CCSO hates proactive cops. They had the tendency to blackball them and push them away under Davis. It's a shame because our crime problem here in Waldorf is getting worse not better. And if we need any type of cop, it's the aggressive ones who don't take no $hit. Hopefully Sheriff Coffey will understand this and add some of these guys back to the street. He's doing a great job so far, hope he keeps it up.....

That was true of the old administration, but let me tell you therer is a new Sheriff in town and he plays by the "old school rules". You prevent crime when you can and take out the trash when you can't. He wants as many officers as possible out on the streets including his commanders. He doesn't see policing as an office job. He rewards proactive policework. He is about making the county better for all citizens. And I would say he got here just in time.

So far, he's been in office for 7 months and I've seen no changes for the positive.

Unfortunately for the new administration, just when they got in so did the new county commissioners. So the resources that were available to the previous administration were SEVERELY cut for the new one. They did need money for the new ballfield after all. And I guess they feel entertainment takes precedence over public safety. Think about all of the new neighborhoods and shopping centers going in day after day. If they are going to add them they should take the impact fees the builders pay and put it towards fire/ems/police but they don't. You only have so many officers and you can't work them 24 hours a day. Speaking for someone who has seen the number of calls that come in on a daily basis I can tell you it is hundreds a day. I never realized until I saw it how overburdened our public safety and emergency services were. I really believe that if everyone got to see the volume of calls that come through the CCSO, they would see things a bit differently.

I have seen the number of calls coming through.

If you think CCSO needs more funding, run for office against our miserable county commisionners. :yay:

I would love to but I am not one for giving everything to people who don't earn it so I doubt I would win. The new commissioners seem hell bent on giving to those who never earned it and don't deserve it. I am for the working people. I am not for all of these social welfare programs. I wouldn't make it as a politician because I won't change my views to get votes and that apparently is how you get elected.

I'm so sad to hear they are not increasing public safety along with all the new development. When the Waldorf ballfield project was being introduced to the public I wrote a letter to the county saying that the ballfield will be a great addition provided that it will be protected well. But if it goes the way of the St Charles mall, most families will stay away from the ballfield and eventually move out of the county.

I was impressed to see that they were putting a police station inside the St Charles mall. Hopefully more police presence will improve that area. But I think the biggest problem may be priorities. My stomach churns when I see speed traps on our country roads. While I acknowledge speeding may be an issue, it's not nearly as bad as the violent crimes happening elsewhere. And it really troubling when you hear that the speed traps are set up during rush hour to "catch the commuters". Like it's the commuters causing the big crimes in the county. I'd like to think the police force is using those tickets to pay for increased presence in the violent crime areas but that may be just wishful thinking.
