CSM CSM Brings Home Second Consecutive MDJUCO Golf Championship

The College of Southern Maryland Hawks golf team won the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference (MDJUCO) Conference Golf Championship April 25 at Swan Point Golf Course beating Anne Arundel Community College by four strokes and finishing with a team score of 338. The Hawks golfers will now seek a second consecutive Region XX Tournament crown later this week.

“If every player can improve and play to their potential then the team will meet success,” CSM Head Coach David Russell said. “In order to win the region this year, the boys will need to perform at their best.”

CSM Sophomores Tyler Potts, left, and William Garrett remain at the top of the MDJUCO Leader Board.

Hawks’ Sophomore William Garrett of Chesapeake Beach placed second at Swan Point, shooting a round of 76 and earning himself 30 MDJUCO points. The total points the golfers earned for their placements in this year’s conference championship were doubled because of their play. Sophomore Tyler Potts of Owings tied for third with his round of 79 and he was awarded 28 MDJUCO points.

Garrett and Potts, who serve as team co-captains, were also named to the All-MDJUCO First Team for their play this season.

The All-Conference teams were decided by points accumulated from all five MDJUCO matches this season. Garrett finished the season with the most MDJUCO season points, 93, and Potts finished with the second-most with 88.

Sophomore Mark Burgess of La Plata shot an 88 at Swan Point, good for eighth on the day and 18 MD JUCO season points. Burgess was named to the All-MDJUCO Second Team with 59 points.

Freshman Jackson Bennett of Leonardtown finished with a round of 95. He ended the season with 16 MDJUCO season points after receiving six points for his play at Swan Point. Freshman Jordan Lofton of Waldorf shot a 97, to earn four points and finish the season with 10 MD JUCO points.

The Region XX Championship is May 3-5 at Cumberland Country Club. If the Hawks win the Region XX Championship, they will qualify for the National Championship at Swan Lake Golf Resort in Plymouth, Indiana held May 21-24.
