Sharing the Power of Generosity with CSM’s Students
Giving never gets old, especially when the generosity is part of the global initiative of #GivingTuesday. This 24-hour online giving blitz has become an annual tradition since 2012 for the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) Foundation, which is focusing on the giving season by inspiring people to come together to support the communities they love. This year’s #GivingTuesday is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 3, following the frenzy of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.
As a longtime enthusiast of #GivingTuesday and providing matching donations to gifts made to the Cox Family Memorial Scholarship, CSM Foundation Director Emerita and 1969 Alum Linda Cox of La Plata has often described the day as a reminder about the true meaning of giving. “The holiday season can be frantic and GivingTuesday gives us pause to slow down, reflect and make meaningful gifts of every size to help change lives here at home in Southern Maryland.”
The spirit of generosity this #GivingTuesday especially is significant for another longtime alum, Danny Williams of Issue, who went from playing as a student athlete with the college’s basketball team and its first baseball team in 1968 to wrapping up a 41-year career of teaching and coaching students at the college he loved in 2011. Besides holding titles of 1968 alum, past alumni association president, professor emeritus, Hall of Famer and coach, Williams now holds the title of having a scholarship in his name that will be awarded to full-time student athletes in good academic standing.
Through the years, Williams has said, “Students are always No. 1. Giving the ability for somebody to go to college and to give them choices to start an education is an important role of the college.” With this in mind, his friends, spearheaded by Jerry and Barbara Green, recognized Williams’ longtime impact at the college and the students he coached across eight sports and 65 seasons by creating the Danny Williams Scholarship in his honor and presented it to him at the CSM Foundation’s Golf Classic in August.
The 2019 CSM Foundation’s Annual Golf Classic kicked off with the surprise announcement of the Danny Williams Scholarship. Initially raising $1,000 to honor the beloved CSM Professor Emeritus and coach, more than $2,500 was raised by the end of the event.
The scholarship came as a complete surprise to Williams. He said that announcing the creation of the scholarship during the tournament was personally meaningful since it was Williams who with alums Greg Cockerham ‘and Rob Chamberlain had together initiated the tournament decades earlier as a way “to raise money for scholarships and we began with raising a couple of thousands of dollars.” To date, the annual signature event, now held at the Swan Point Yacht and Country Club, has raised more than $1 million for student success and athletic programs.
Even more, Williams said, he was humbled that his scholarship began receiving donations immediately, noting, “It was such a gift that the winner of the 50/50 raffle, Bill McGee, donated all of the proceeds from the raffle back to this scholarship.” And finally, making the day even more memorable, Williams was the winner of the tournament’s hole-in-one, earning him a Yeti cooler donated by Waldorf Ford and a trip to Mexico donated by Kemper Sports.
Williams’ scholarship will be accepting donations during this year’s online giving day. And, like Williams, for many of CSM’s friends and family, #GivingTuesday becomes the opportunity to not only give back to the CSM community but also to challenge friends to join them in the joy of giving.
When the online event begins Dec. 3, givers can choose among several projects. Along with the generosity shown to scholarships, the CSM Foundation has set a goal to raise support for Student Success, including the Hawk Feeders, athletics and the Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. Center for Leadership and Scholarship Endowment.
