CSM CSM Offers Recreation & Fitness Draft Proposal for Leonardtown Town Council to Consider in Annual Application of Community Parks, Playground Grant Par

The following Letter to the Editor was sent by the CSM Government Relations and Public Information Office to the St. Mary’s Enterprise. CSM thanks the editorial board of St. Mary’s Enterprise for publishing the letter in its June 8, 2019 edition.

Letter to the Editor:

To clarify information that was reported in the May 31 issue of the St. Mary’s Enterprise, “CSM to purchase pickleball courts, exercise equipment,” the College of Southern Maryland has been collaborating with the Town of Leonardtown to pursue recreation and fitness opportunities that could take advantage of grant funding that is available to the Town through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Parks & Playgrounds Program.

As a result of these conversations, the college provided a project proposal at the May 13 Town Council meeting. The project includes (1) the purchase of five outdoor exercise stations as Phase 2 of the Nature & Fitness Trail at the Leonardtown Campus and (2) the installation of pickleball courts at the Leonardtown Campus.

These proposals correspond with findings cited in the 2017 Land Preservation, Parks, and Recreation Plan Update. In that survey of St. Mary’s County residents, community members had indicated their desire for recreational and fitness opportunities that would include connecting trails and adding other amenities for walking and bicycling.

The Commissioners of Leonardtown must submit its application to the state by August 21 through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for use of these funds. Letters of support may be shared with CSM or the Town of Leonardtown to be submitted with the grant application.

The project remains in proposal status pending the Town receiving the grant.
