Cybertruck no good off-road because "jumps"?

So of course, everyone has an opinion, especially about a design this polarizing. But I did a double take when a guy tells me that he's sure it wont make it off road because it cant take jumps.......

Now, I'm no off road genius, but outside youtubers and rednecks with beaters they are trying to kill, are jumps a thing people expect out of off rad machines? Last I knew, slow and steady was the name of the game outside mudding, where forward motion is life.

They have some off-road trail climb competitions and such but the vehicles they use are built for it. Standard thinking off-road - jumps are typically avoided. But 4-wheel drive is known to take you farther into trouble before you need help.

:yeahthat: You would think charging stations would be a bigger problem.

Thats where planning comes in. Knowing that sand will eat your range like a fat kid eating cake, for instance. Low speed stuff like trails and rock should be okay, assuming you start with a range greater than 300, torque is king, and full torque at 1% throttle, thats nice. Even hard pack desert like Mojave. Just gotta know your rig, right? Multi hundred mile jaunts into Baja? Maybe pass on that stuff :) Mudding? Again, maybe not the best choice.

But yeah, I was thinking that not many folks are jumping their full size trucks. :)

I'm not sure why Tesla is still bothering with the Cybertruck. They've milked it out so long that most other auto manufacturers have already released their own EV pickups.

Because, if they pull it off, they will do what other makers simply can't. Deliver a capable high efficiency long range pickup with a real profit margin. And I'm not sure if two counts as most. 1/2, really. Ford, whose Lightning costs over 70K if you want better than 230 miles of range and the towing package. Or Rivian, who starts at I think 70K for a smaller less capable truck.

GMs offering will weigh over 8,000lbs and delivers after the Cybertruck, and Ram has shown nothing except a concept they plan to deliver on in 2025 maybe.

Of course, we don't have final numbers for the Cybertruck yet, either cost or specs.

From Car and Driver -

Along with available all-wheel drive, the Cybertruck can tow up to 14,000 pounds and has an estimated driving range of 500-plus miles. They don't specify if that 14,000 pounds is for 500 miles though.

Starting price is under $40K, but you need to spend a close to $70K to get the top rated specs.

All the promises remind me of Perpetual Motion hype and Homeopathic Dilutions.

Pure bull####.

Perhaps one day when they make breakthroughs in High Capacitive-Reluctance or develop a baseplate of pre-famulated amulite... But until then...

So we know the prices are going up. Everything has since 2019. The 39,999 one might not even get made. And nope, we dont know range of any of them towing. Optimists hope that like the Semi, that will be with the max rated tow weight. Pessimist think it will be half. Realists like myself think it will be in the 3/4 range, as it should be more efficient than others.

Prices? Assuming that the single motor 39K is gone and dual motor is the bottom one. It was supposed to be 49K. That was for 300 miles range and 10K tow. 69K was a tri motor, which has maybe gone away in favor of a qyad motor with 500 miles range and 14k tow. All have a 3,500 payload capacity. My guess is that the dual goes got 60-63K and the quad motor goes for 80-85K.

But 85K for 500 mile range crushes any competitor. Even if it is unladen.

Which particular promises do you have in mind? Is someone promising magical things that cannot be achieved?

Promises of ranges on Trucks are fiction. The range of something weighing 7000lbs is going to diminsh rapidly when pulling another 10k lbs, and additional surface drag. That alleged 500 mile range is going to diminish far below, quite probably less than half, I'd guess to about 40% at best, and eliminate any benefit of the vehicle.

They should stick to making compact roller-skate type cars for city dwellers.

... And P.S. That Tesla truck is still the goofiest looking thing on the market. :lmao:

Well, looks are subjective. And it's not fiction unless they promise to tow 14k that 500, which they have not. Do gas trucks give a range or mpg when towing?

Gas trucks don't make a range promise at all.

I will drive an electric car or truck when one is given to me, and it damn sure won't be something that looks like it came out of a G.I. Joe comic book.
