D80 Problems already!

A friend buys a Nikon D80 (NOT THE D40...SORRY)...we are shooting, first camera. For some reason after turning it on it will not fire...looking at the screen it shows r11 blinking.

I didn't have the book to look the code up, but it happened 10 times in 15 minutes. After removing the battery and reinserting it would be fine until you shut it off and turned it back on again.
I tried the usual, remove lens, card, battery, etc...
Has anyone had this with the new Nikon. I was thinking contacts or a lens problem, but it has to be a battery reading or contact prob. Everything is a week or so old, brandy new. They are looking up the code, but I wanted to know if this was a regular prob with some of YALL?

Thanks in advance!!

Never, since 9/07.

Crap...maybe it was the D80...I need some coffee. Thanks though, much appreciated! I had a canon that did this with a Sigma lens but never heard of Nik' doing this?

It was the D80...sorry I did a search and found this...apparently it is a common problem with them...ugh.

Let me start out by saying that I know next-to-nothing about camera's or photography. I purchase this camera to start learning.

Last night I took delivery of a new D80 with 2 lenses:
- 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G EDII, AF-S DX Zoom (the kit lens)
- 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED, AF-S DX VR Zoom

Everything I've tried is simply with the camera in Auto mode.

When I attach the 55-200 lens everything works as I would expect. Auto focus works, camera takes pictures, etc.

When I attach the 18-55 nothing works. The LCD and Viewfinder both show "F--" and when I attempt to take a picture, "r11" is alwo displayed. The camera won't take pictures. If I put the camera in "M" mode, and manually focus, the shutter will release, but the resulting picture is all black.

I got this late last night, so I haven't contacted Nikon customer support yet.

#1 - This lense should work perfectly with the camera, right? It was the kit lens.
#2 - Any idea why its not working?

Cant say my D80 has ever done this, maybe try googling it.

What does the r11 button mean on my nikon d40x camera? - Yahoo! Answers

Doesnt make much sense to me....

Thanks X! Buffer...hmmmm.
Yeah, it's a great camera...very sharp. From what I found, it's the lens...possibly. But she had the 200 on not the 18-55. When I removed and inspected the contacts on the lens...nothing...R&R the battery...worked no problem...until power off then on again.
Electronics, huh?

Start with this

If the lens is installed properly the r11 should not be blinking.

Lock the lens at f22 and put the camera go to the Auto Position or "green camera icon"

Thankd D! I thought maybe the same thing...a setting prob...but it would only fire on any setting after I removed the batt. Auto, shutter, it didn't matter...I cleaned the lens and body contacts still nata.

Dumb question...why set to f22?

You lock it to F22 and the camera will adjust it up and down as you select what F stop you want.

Of course many of the newer lenses do not have an aperture ring, so it may not be applicable to those. The only lens I have that does is my 50mm......

Zoooooooom
I have a D80..well it's sitting in it's box because I keep saying I'm going to sell it and then I never advertise it, :lmao:, but I've not had any problems with it. I shot with it every day for 14 straight days while in Canada and Montana with the 70-200 f2.8, 12-24 f4, 50mm f.18, and 15-55 all with no problems.

Twilight, check NikonCafe.com it's a fantastic forum to go to for Nikon info and help.
