" Kamini Patel's husband picked up the ringing phone Sunday night to hear his distraught brother talking about a botched suicide involving himself and his two young sons, she said. Her husband, Ragendra, told his brother to drive to their house in Hanover Park.
A few minutes later, about 9:15 p.m., Kaushik Patel arrived with the badly burned children buckled into their car seats, Kamini Patel said Tuesday. The boys had burns on their face, chest and knees, and the younger boy was naked but wrapped in a blanket, she said.
"Kaushik's face was black with smoke," Kamini Patel said, "and his hair looked like it had been burned. He was so disturbed."
The children seemed in shock, she said. "They were shaking," she said. "I said, 'It's OK, I'm with you.' It was like taking care of a baby. The little one said he needed water."
