Dad. What was the scariest movie you ever saw?

The subject of scary movies over dinner the other night when of course my daughter asked what was the scariest movie I ever saw. Always looking for opportunities to impress or enlighten my sweet 14 yo since this is Dad speaking I explained, that depends at what point in your life you watched the movie. Case in point, at age 7 I first watched Invaders From Mars on the old black and white and I can still to this day relive how frightened I was after watching that flick. Much later in life it was Night of the Living Dead with it’s over the top graphic Zombie scenes for that day made me for weeks after not want to go outside at night. Much older and a little wiser, I was lucky enough to watch the Exorcist in downtown DC when it first opened and can recall the amount of anxiety and tension in the sold out theater that it effected you in ways no other film had. I recall constantly reminding myself that this is not real and just a film. And I suppose the last film that truly scared me is the original Alien movie with the creature busting from the gut made everyone look at each other and go OMG. So the point my young Padawan is no single movie can be rated as the scariest but intimately linked in that period of time in your life when first viewed and factors such as maturity, emotional state and intellectual development all play a roll. Satisfied with myself that these words actually came out of my mouth and the satisfied look on my kids face that Dad came thru on this one I promptly ordered the table cleared, followed by the getting ready for bed drill so as she wouldn’t have an opportunity for any immediate follow-up questions.
And for all that care, I slept well that night

OK. Now that you know mine what was the scariest movie(s) you ever saw?

All of the 9/11 movies and documentaries. It will happen again, and that is scarier than any boogeyman Hollywood could create.

I *thought* the scariest movie I ever saw was The Legend of Boggy Creek. Until we rented it for the kids and they howled with laughter. :ohwell:

Carrie :shocking: May not have been the actual "scariest," but is still the one that comes to mind first.

My kids like to brag that their tough and no movie is to scary. So when I threatned to dust off those old Barney VHS tapes they loved to watch 5 times a day and make them sit and watch if they didnt stop fighting well lets say you could hear a pin drop in the house after that. True Bliss

I have to agree with High EGT on the Exorcist pick. It has to be the scariest for me. I was young and it left a impression.

Besides, the devil is something that anyone with a shred of religious belief has to believe exists. The Freddy's, Jason's, and Michael Myers are all just bad dreams.

Exorcist was. Couldnt sleep alone for 3 days. There was a movie in the 60's called Repulsion. I was way too young (10-11) to see it but I did and it scared me for years.
