If you zoom in on the high resolution copy of the first picture, you'll see a sailor standing there on top with an M60E3 machine gun. I don't know what he thinks he's guarding considering there is no ammunition in the gun...

I'd bet they came up and stayed up, but I doubt it leaked unless a bit through a hull fitting.
