I would love to get my 4 year old daughter into dance classes, not necessarily ballet but would like jazz or tap also. I've searched everywhere I could think of and can't find a decent place. Any ideas? looking in St Mary's Lex Pk area but willing to go further out if needbe.

Do a forum search. There are quite a few threads on it. :yay:

My daughter went to 3 dance studios in 3 years. Finally found one I'm willing to go back to, Judy's Studio in LaPlata. But I don't know you'd want to make that trip from Lex. Park.

Gracies Guys and Gals Dance Studio is fantastic and one of the best in the area. They are in Hollywood, MD. They have several Jazz/Tap/Ballet combo classes available. Registration for September is coming up soon.

ballet caliente in the park. I went there for many years. excellent training, fun, healthy! There is nothing better than seeing your child in the big fancy end of year recital. no boring lines of dancers tapping their toes..always a wonderful story ballet. I recomend the place wholeheartedly. The ballet is wonderful, but the jazz classes are first rate as well.

I highly recommend Ballet Caliente. But so you know, ballet is primary and jazz is secondary.

I heard from a couple parents that Judy is trying to sell her studio. Is this true? They said that it has been hush hush for a few years so I am not sure how they know now. Just wondering.

I haven't heard anything about that. She seems to love her job and the studio, but I imagine she could be thinking about retirement.

We go to Julie Rogers Studio of Dance in Huntingtown. 410-257-6078. My daughter started there at 2 yrs old with toddler 1, which is a tap/jazz/tumble/ballet combo. They also have a toddler 2 which is also a combo class. We love it there.

Hello, I enrolled my Daughter in Dreams Studio of Dance. They are located in Mechanicsville. They do everything from Tap, Jazz, Hip-hop, Ballet, Pointe, Gymnastics etc. I love the studio. You should check them out. Its about 15 mins from Lex. Park. Worth the drive. Rates are great too. They even have a hip-hop class for 4 - 5 year olds.

My daughter went to summer dance camp at Dreams of Dance in Mechanicsville. They were working on splits and the teacher yelled at them to "Go down until it hurts". I took them out that very day.

Well if someone is going to bump old threads....

Judy did sell her studio and retired. It's now run as a second location for GJ's Studio, which has their main location in Waldorf. Girlie had taken a year off in favor of playing sports and when she decided to go back to dance, Judy's was gone. I've talked to some of the Mom's who had daughters in her old class and they are happy enough with the management under GJ's, but when Girlie decided to go back, there were some things about GJ's that neither of us felt were the right fit for her. Frankly, she's never going to be a competitive dancer and GJ's is somewhat geared toward that. Sooooo...

Girlie is on studio number 4. This time, she's at House of Dance in the old Hyperspace building in Hollywood. They are relatively new to having the younger girls. They used to be mostly adult classes, but with the new location and increased space have more classes for kids. Less than 4 months in, I'm happy enough. Her class is really small. The people there are very nice. I'll have a better idea of how they compare after a few more months, but so far, so good. :yay:

dance requires dedication and hard work. And sometimes discomfort. Besides..you don't get your splits from wishing for them. I was older when I began at ballet and worked my butt off to get my splits. It doesn't feel wonderful when you are doing it, but knowing that you are able to mold your body through your own hard work is an excellent reward. Show me a ballet teacher that isn't a little rough sometimes, and I will show you a crappy ballet teacher.

Perhaps at an older level competing in competions but certainly NOT for a 6 year old.
