Daniel 12:12 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise[a] will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. 4 But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”

OK... this is where I have no idea where to go with this study. I've spent a good amount of time reading through the commentaries and I'm still not sure that I'm finding the real meaning of these verses. So the best I can do is offer what I think is correct....
Most of the commentaries use Matthew 24 as a starting point. I went back and read that chapter again along with commentaries. After all, Jesus was there in the beginning. He was there when the angel was talking to Daniel. Jesus knows more about this than anyone who walked the earth.
And now I'm more confused than ever.... so rather than quoting Guzik or Austin.... I'll just pray and do the best I can do.
Who is Michael? Michael is not just an Angel... he's an archangel. Apparently there are classes or tiers of hierarchy in the responsibilities of the angels. Michael and Satan started out in the same class. Michael stayed true to God and Satan wanted to be better than God. Remember this though.... both have to take their marching orders from God and both have to listen to Jesus.
Michael is in charge of fighting for Israel. Now if we think in terms of the Heavenly battle for Israel, we can imagine a tent pitched near the site of the war, where there is a big map with all the troop movements on it.... and Michael is the one that is in charge of all the troop movements. Michael is like the General Patton of the Heavenly battle for Israel [only bigger and badder because he's an archangel in God's army not just a human on earth].
Who's going to awake?
So when the battle gets so bad that the Archangel Michael is called to action, there will be a lot of humans to get out of harms way. On the nightly news we've been watching people fleeing from all kinds of armies in so many battles lately. It's easy to picture a mass evacuation from a war zone. If an Archangel is going to be involved, this is going to be one big bad war zone and there will be a lot of humans to move out of the way. There is a list of everyone who has to be evacuated at the time of this major war.
According to verse 2 there are two categories of humans who will be moved out of the way for this battle. There are those who have always stuck with God and those who have gone with the flow of being stupid humans [IMHO]. When this evacuation takes place there's going to be a loud and victorious "I told you so!". Those who didn't stick with God, they will be stuck with shame and contempt that they will never be able to shake.
So when this war begins.... humans will have made up their minds. They will be on one side or the other.... it's as simple as that. The ones who are smart will be on the side of God because Michael is leading our troops and God has the battle plan. Satan is totally on his own.... and that doesn't bode well for him.
