Daniel 12:1 “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. 2 Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise[a] will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. 4 But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge.”
5 Then I, Daniel, looked, and there before me stood two others, one on this bank of the river and one on the opposite bank. 6 One of them said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, “How long will it be before these astonishing things are fulfilled?”
7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time.[b] When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”
8 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will the outcome of all this be?”
9 He replied, “Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 Many will be purified, made spotless and refined, but the wicked will continue to be wicked. None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.
11 “From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12 Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.
13 “As for you, go your way till the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.”
a. Daniel 12:3 Or who impart wisdom
b. Daniel 12:7 Or a year, two years and half a year
"The words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end." To me.... that's like saying "wait til your father gets home". Some days those words would be like a dark cloud hanging over the rest of the day..... some days this was the most excellent time of the day. IMHO.... this says If you are smart.... you'll read the whole book for yourself and understand what's going on.
The easy English commentary has been used all the way through... so why stop now.
This is the rest of what the man told Daniel. This is certainly about the end of the world. It will be a terrible time, especially for the people who love the real God. (See Mark 13:19-20.) But the angels will help them and God will rescue them. God will only allow bad things to happen for a certain time.
The people who have died will come back to life. God will reward those who were loyal to him. They were the wise people. Those who did not love God will have shame.
The man told Daniel to stop writing. The things that he told Daniel about will not happen yet. They will not happen until just before the end of the world. But they will certainly happen. God has promised that they will happen.
Daniel saw two more angels. One of them asked the man, ‘How long will it be before these extraordinary things end?’ The angel knew that God would only allow bad things to happen for a certain time.
The man said that the time would last three and a half years. He actually said one time, two times and half a time. This may mean three and a half years. But God will stop these bad things after a certain time.
Then the end will come. Then God will show his power. He will show that he is in control.
Daniel still did not understand. He asked the man a different question. ‘How will it all end?’ But the man did not tell him any more. He said that he would not explain any more until the time arrived. This means that we will not understand all about the end of the world. But we do know enough. We know that many bad things will happen. We also know that God will stop those things after a certain time. The good people are those who are really wise. Wicked people are not wise and they will continue to do evil things.
We do not know what the 1290 days and the 1335 days mean. But they both mean about three and a half years. We do know that God will only allow the bad things to happen for a certain time. God’s people must be patient. Then they will be happy.
The man told Daniel to be patient. Daniel would die before the end of the world. But the man promised him that he would become alive again. Then God would give him his reward.
Wow.... that give me pause..... I didn't think everyone would wake up.... Just the "dead in Christ". I've also given Bibletrack.org a workout while reading this book.
This last chapter of Daniel ties it all up. A resurrection is promised for the righteous Jews and ultimate deliverance for the Nation of Israel. How long will this final onslaught against God's people last. Well, verse 7 says, "it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished." That's Daniel speak for time (1 year), times (2 years) and half (1/2/year) - a total of 3 1/2 years. That certainly must refer to the last half of the tribulation. Then we get some interesting references to additional days in verses 11 and 12. We see a reference to 1,290 days and another reference to 1,335 days. No one is certain what these days mean. They fall at a time of transition between the tribulation and millennium. Perhaps it refers to the time required for the judgments that will take place at that time. Revelation 11:2-3 fixes the actual period of the last half of the tribulation at 1,260 or 42 months. I guess we'll have to wait until we get to heaven to see the exact schedule of tribulation-ending, millennium-beginning events.
Take particular notice of Daniel 12:2, "And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt." While nearly all of the prophecies of the Old Testament deal specifically with Israel's repossession of an everlasting kingdom under the Messiah, here is a direct reference to the resurrection of those who have passed away.
One more point is to be particularly noted here - the appearance of "the abomination that maketh desolate" in verse 11. We saw this reference in Daniel 9:27 and know this to be a reference to the "beast" of Revelation 13. Jesus makes reference to this "abomination of desolation" in Matthew 24:15, Mark 13:14 and Luke 21:20 in his prophetic message given on Mount Olivet the week before his crucifixion. Paul, in II Thessalonians 2, gives us a detailed look at how the beast carries out this "abomination of desolation."
I also read enduringword.com while posting.Michael shall stand up: The angel Michael is often associated with spiritual battle (Jude 1:9, and Revelation 12:7). Since Michael is called the archangel , he is Satan’s true opposite. Satan is not the opposite of Jesus; he is the opposite of Michael, this high-ranking angel.
The great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people: In addition to his role as a spiritual warrior, Michael has a special job in protecting Israel. God appointed Michael as a spiritual guardian over Israel.
Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament: Those who live in God’s wisdom will shine. Despite the entire calamity, all the difficulty coming upon Israel, God has those who are wise, and they shall shine.
And those who turn many to righteousness like the stars: Here, the wise among God’s people are those who turn many to righteousness.
All God’s people are like stars in the sense that they radiate light and help others to see and find their way. But certainly, those who turn many to righteousness shine even more brightly, helping even more people to see the light and find their way.
This promise applies to all the wise, and all of those who turn many to righteousness through all ages. But it may have its most specific application to the 144,000 evangelists from Israel’s tribes during the Tribulation (Revelation 7).
Forever and ever: The brightness of God’s wise ones, and those who turn many to righteousness, will last forever. It isn’t fading. It endures, when so many other things that we put our effort into, even if they succeed, give only a temporary “shine.” It is worth it to invest our lives into the things that last forever and ever.
One said to the man clothed in linen… “How long shall the fulfillment of these wonders be?” Seemingly, these other men on the riverbank were angels. One angel asked the other, not for the benefit of the angel, but for Daniel’s benefit and our benefit.
Held up his right hand and his left hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever: In a solemn oath, one angel announced that the time of trouble would last three and one-half years (a time, times, and half a time).
The prediction was emphasized by the solemn oath, and by the miracle that accompanied the words: who was above the waters in the river. The angel “walked on water” when he told the other angel and Daniel that these things would happen within a three and one half year period.
A time, times, and half a time: This three and one-half year period is well known in other passages of Biblical prophecy.
The commentaries have one major thing in common.... they all want to explain.... "when". I'm an old woman.... I just turned 70. I'm cancer ridden and I deal with a head ache every single day. I'm blind in one eye and can't see out the other. I have family that hasn't talked to me in years..... and family that I could drive myself crazy because I worry so much over them. I don't know how many times I have had to make myself thank God for the day.... in spite of the fact that my original thought upon waking is "not another one.... not another day to go through.... ". I ask "when" a lot!
I am not so concerned about "when" for everyone else.... they can keep keeping on if that is what they choose..... I just can't understand putting off Heaven for earth for a single minute.... but they say they want to keep on living.... so ok..... I can honestly say.... I ask about "when" and it's personal.
Rise and Shine..... now has a different meaning for me..... I want to Rise..... and if I Rise.... I will Shine!!!! It's Biblical.
I have to go..... Hubby wants some breakfast.....
I will be telling myself all day long.... the "when" is only important so I can look forward to seeing the "rise and shine".
