Daniel 6:1 [a]It pleased Darius to appoint 120 satraps to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel. The satraps were made accountable to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom. 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”

a.Daniel 6:1 In Aramaic texts 6:1-28 is numbered 6:2-29

By now Daniel is about 80 years old.

All the Bible Story books I remember as a kid, painted him as a young man when they got to the story in Chapter 6. This is not so. He had been captured and castrated as a child. He served under Nebuchadnezzar, then Nebuchadnezzar's sons and now he's serving under Darius.

Darius the Mede was appointed king of Babylon by Cyrus, king of Persia. Darius chose Daniel and two others out of all those who were available in Babylon.

Now we know that the others were jealous. They had been jealous ever since Daniel interpreted the first dream for Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel has displayed loyalty and diplomacy. On top of that, he's honest and diligent. When all those qualities combine with experience, it makes quite a resume. No wonder Darius chose him.

One of the commentaries says this about Daniel.

Daniel 6:3, states that Daniel had an excellent spirit about him and was preferred above the other presidents. Darius seeing Daniel's excellent character thought to put him in charge over the whole "realm" which referred to all of Babylon. Daniel became the third ruler of Neo-Babylon which was a part of the Persian Empire ruled by the king Cyrus.
