Daniel 7:1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream, and visions passed through his mind as he was lying in bed. He wrote down the substance of his dream.

OK. Here's where I get lost. So for my sake alone... I'm going to take these dreams very slow. A number of preachers and teachers have attempted to show me these passages.... but I'm so lost my eyes glaze over and I might as well have not even gone to Bible Study those nights. Please pardon my slow progress as we go through these.

The first commentary on Verse 1 calls this first dream "Daniel's First Prophetic Vision of World History".

This first vision of Daniel, recorded in Chapter 7, takes place in "the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon" which chronologically places it after Chapter four and between Chapters 5 and 6. In time the vision was in 556BC when Nabonidus, Belshazzar's father, was king of Babylon. Daniel's reason for placing it here was because the first six chapters present a chronological accounts of the history Babylon. The following chapters 7-12 deal with prophetic events which God revealed to Daniel.

In another commentary we learn that Daniel could have given us even more detail but he didn't because he was stopped from doing so.

Telling the main facts: Daniel could have given us more detail but the Holy Spirit only wanted him to write the main facts. We may wish that Daniel went into greater detail, but he didn't.

So these dreams, according to verse 1 of Daniel 7, happened after King Nebuchadnezzar had passed away and during the time Nebuchadnezzar's sons were in control. Remember, Nebuchadnezzar became a believer after some pretty hefty miracles concerning Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. The two most well known miracles took place in the smelting furnace and the lion's den.

The first of the dreams may have occurred when Nebuchadnezzar's sons didn't take the life lessons learned by Nebuchadnezzar easily. The commentaries say that Daniel started writing down these dreams after chapter 4 and between chapters 5&6. So if we go back to Daniel chapter 5 we find the story of the writing on the wall.

Daniel 5:2 While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his father[a] had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. 3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6 His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking.

I guess seeing this would cause me to have dreams too.
